Product Description

This design is dedicated to my mother, who was my best friend. She passed away suddenly from colon cancer in 2011.

Each section of this infinity scarf represents memories with my mother. Walks on the beach, while collecting rocks and shells. Her beautiful singing voice and her love of music/rhythm. Her love of flowers and gardening. The reason for choosing to design a cowl, is the memory of her hugs she gave freely.

You have the choice of a cowl or an infinity scarf. This is worked flat, using a provisional cast on (instructions for a provisional cast-on is included). Work each stitch section for a cowl, repeat each section one more time for the infinity scarf. Then, either Kitchener stitch or three needle bind-off together. This pattern has seed stitch (walks on the beach), a simple 6-st cable pattern (the flow and rhythm of music), and a simple lace pattern(flowers in the garden).

My Best Friend Cowl by Handmade By Zan Designs

Project Overview

My Best Friend Cowl is a meaningful knit design created by Handmade By Zan Designs as a tribute to cherished memories. This versatile pattern offers crafters the choice between creating a cozy cowl or an infinity scarf, both worked using the same stitch sections. The design combines three distinct stitch patterns, each representing meaningful memories: walks on the beach, the rhythm of music, and a love of flowers and gardening.

What You Will Make

This pattern produces either a cowl or an infinity scarf, depending on how you work the stitch sections. The cowl version features each stitch section worked once, while the infinity scarf version repeats each section to create additional length. Both versions are finished using either Kitchener stitch or three needle bind-off to join the ends together seamlessly.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Provisional Cast On: The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on method, with full instructions included in the downloadable PDF
  • Flat Knitting: The entire project is worked flat rather than in the round
  • Kitchener Stitch: An option for grafting the ends together with an invisible seam
  • Three Needle Bind-Off: An alternative finishing technique for joining the cast-on and bind-off edges

Stitches Featured

  • Seed Stitch: A textured, reversible stitch pattern representing walks on the beach and the collection of rocks and shells
  • Cable Pattern: A simple 6-stitch cable design that captures the flow and rhythm of music
  • Lace Pattern: A delicate openwork stitch section symbolizing flowers in the garden

Yarn and Materials

This beginner-friendly pattern is designed to be worked with chunky weight yarn, making it an accessible project for knitters new to the craft. The specific yarn and needle recommendations are detailed in the complete pattern PDF. The chunky yarn weight ensures relatively quick project completion while maintaining clear stitch definition across all three pattern sections.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, My Best Friend Cowl is an excellent choice for knitters developing their foundational skills. While the pattern introduces several techniques including provisional cast-on, multiple stitch patterns, and finishing methods, the straightforward construction and chunky yarn make it manageable for those new to knitting.
