Product Description
Just like crocodiles and frogs, these mummy and baby monsters love to travel with the little one inside its mummy's mouth - and as a special twist both of them have mouth pockets for you to hide your most secret possessions inside!
The mummy monster is big enough to provide a substantial cuddle (7 x 6 inches) whilst the baby is small enough to pop inside a pocket or lunch box (4 x 3 inches) and, to provide extra amusement, their stiff lips can be bent into shape. What fun!
The Mummy and Baby Monsters pdf knitting pattern gives you clear step by step instructions to make your own cute critters.
Materials: 2 knitting needles (US2.5/3mm), 2 knitting needles (US2/2.75mm), 50g pink yarn for the inside mouth, 50g yarn for the mummy's body, 20g yarn for the baby's body, 10g complementary yarn for the lips, 5g white yarn for the eyeballs, 2 black toy safety eyes (9mm), 2 black toy safety eyes (6mm), 4 pipe cleaners or wire, Polyfil stuffing, 1 tapestry needle for finishing
Mummy and Baby Monsters Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern by ButterflyLove1 provides instructions for creating a pair of decorative monster toys: a larger mummy monster and a smaller baby monster. These soft, stuffed creatures are designed as charming decorative pieces or containers suitable for display, storage, or play. The pattern creates finished monsters approximately 7 inches (17.5cm) in height for the adult version, with the baby monster scaled proportionally smaller.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The construction method relies on tight knit fabric to prevent stuffing visibility, achieved by using needles significantly smaller than standard yarn recommendations. The pattern utilizes standard knitting abbreviations including knit (K), purl (P), and increase (Inc) stitches to shape the three-dimensional forms. Pieces are assembled and finished using a tapestry needle to create the complete monsters.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – forms the primary fabric structure
- Purl stitch (P) – creates textural variation in the design
- Increase stitch (Inc) – shapes the monster forms by adding stitches where needed
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern uses DK weight yarn as the primary material. You will need approximately 5–10 grams of white yarn for the eyeballs. The designer recommends selecting a slightly lighter yarn shade for the baby monster to reflect natural color variations found in parent-child animal pairs. Additional materials include two sets of plastic toy safety eyes (one 6mm pair and one 9mm pair for size variation between monsters), four white pipe cleaners for added detail or poseable elements, and Polyfil polyester fiberfill for stuffing the completed pieces.
Needles and Tension Requirements
The pattern calls for two knitting needles in sizes US2.5 (3mm) and US2 (2.75mm). Proper tension is critical to this design's success. The recommended approach is to use needles two to three sizes smaller than the yarn's minimum recommended needle size—for example, if your yarn recommends US5 needles, use US2.5 instead. This creates a tightly knit weave that prevents stuffing from showing through the fabric. Working to a tension of 30 stitches and 40 rows per 4-inch (10cm) square using US2.5 needles will produce the appropriately sized mummy monster. A tapestry needle is required for finishing, seaming, and weaving in yarn ends.
Project Applications
These knitted monsters are versatile creations suitable for multiple purposes, including decorative display pieces, soft toy containers, cushion accents, or general craft decorations. The intermediate difficulty level makes this pattern accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping and assembly techniques.
