What is Being Made

Mr Mog's Cabled Cowl is a warm, circular cowl designed for cold winter weather. This knitted accessory measures 24 inches wide by 12 inches deep, providing generous coverage and layering options for neck and shoulder warmth. The cowl is worked seamlessly in the round, creating a continuous tube of fabric without seams.

Techniques Used

This advanced-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its distinctive textured appearance. The cowl begins with a ribbed cast-on and foundation, establishing structure and elasticity. The primary technique throughout the pattern is cable knitting, which involves crossing groups of stitches over one another to create raised, twisted columns of texture. The pattern incorporates both C4B (cable 4 back) and C4F (cable 4 front) maneuvers, as well as T4B (twist 4 back) and T4F (twist 4 front) techniques, which create similar but slightly different textural effects. Working in the round on circular needles or double-pointed needles ensures a seamless construction. The designer uses a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, maintaining pattern consistency throughout the piece.

The pattern alternates between cable crossing rounds (Rounds 1, 5, and 9) and stockinette or textured rounds (Rounds 2-4, 6-8) that allow the cables to develop their characteristic three-dimensional appearance. This rhythmic alternation between active cable work and rest rounds creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity.

Materials and Tools

The cowl is knitted using aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for cable work while creating a fabric with good drape and warmth. The project requires approximately 300 meters of aran weight yarn. Construction requires 6mm (US size 10) needles, available as either a 60-centimeter circular needle or 6-millimeter double-pointed needles, depending on the knitter's preference. Additional tools include a cable needle for manipulating stitches during cable crossings, and a stitch marker to identify the beginning of each round.
