Product Description
Mothwings is a sweeping shawl that blends five colorways in a fade that radiates in several directions. An overall, simple slip-and-Garter pattern crosses the fade, creating a deeply textured, woven appearance. Mothwings is big, light and lovely, and would look awesome in either dramatic or ethereal colors.
Luscious yarn from Ritual Dyes makes it glow. I've partnered with Rachel of Ritual Dyes who is debuting her new yarn base, PIXIE! PIXIE is a lustrous high-twist single of 70% Merino and 30% silk. It has 438 yards to 100 grams, and this big shawl uses it all!
If you are using different yarn, note that this project uses all of five skeins of 430+ yards.
Mothwings Knitted Shawl by Larissa Brown
What is Being Made
Mothwings is a knitted shawl designed by Larissa Brown, inspired by the designer's fascination with moths and their intricate wing patterns. The finished shawl is a large, generously-sized garment that showcases delicate details reminiscent of moth anatomy, including wing swirls, crosshatch lines, and feathered elements. This design celebrates the natural beauty and diversity of moths, with visual references to their distinctive features such as their characteristic eye markings and antenna-like details.
Techniques and Construction
The Mothwings shawl employs traditional knitting techniques to create a lustrous, elegant finished piece. The design incorporates lace elements throughout, creating transparency and drape that mimics the delicate nature of moth wings. The shawl construction uses a fade effect across multiple skeins, allowing the color variations to build visual interest and depth as the knitter progresses through the project. The combination of solid and lace sections creates a sophisticated interplay of texture and light.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern documentation, the shawl features lace stitching throughout, which creates the characteristic openwork and transparency. The crosshatch lines referenced in the design suggest the use of decreases and yarn overs arranged to form geometric patterns. These lace elements are balanced with solid knit sections to create the overall moth-inspired silhouette and visual impact.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Recommended Yarn: Mothwings is designed as a collaboration with Ritual Dyes and features their Pixie yarn base. This yarn is a fingering weight single ply composed of 70% Merino and 30% silk, offering a luxurious blend that produces the lustrous finish characteristic of the completed shawl. The Pixie base provides 438 yards per 100 grams, and the pattern requires 5 skeins worked in a pleasing color fade.
Yarn Alternatives: If substituting yarn, select a light fingering weight option with a minimum of 430 yards per skein to ensure adequate yardage for the full-sized shawl. The silk content in the recommended yarn contributes significantly to the lustrous quality, so yarns with similar fiber blends will produce comparable results.
Needles: Appropriate needles for fingering weight yarn are required, though specific needle size recommendations are not provided in the available pattern documentation.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an accessible project for knitters new to shawl construction. Despite the sophisticated appearance of the finished piece, the techniques employed are fundamental enough for those just beginning their knitting journey.
