Product Description

Mokita means "the truth that everybody knows but no one talks about". The truth in question is mental illness. I designed this shawl to fight the stigma and raise funds for mental health charity Mind – every cent of the sale price will be donated.

Wrap yourself in the comfort of a soft silk and mohair shawl. This one’s highly adaptable, with options for laceweight or aran yarns (or try anything in between!), and a choice of garter stitch or crochet borders – perhaps in a contrast yarn? Add beads to up the glamour factor (tutorial included), or try a smooth silk yarn on the border for extra definition.

The aran version uses three skeins of the recommended yarn, plus a contrast yarn for the crochet border, and measures 72 x 30 inches.

The lace-weight version uses four balls and measures 65 x 23 inches.

Mokita Shawl by Robynn Weldon

What is Being Made

Mokita is a rectangular wrap-style shawl designed by Robynn Weldon. This knitted shawl offers versatility through multiple construction options, allowing knitters to customize the finished dimensions and aesthetic. The shawl features straight edges and a repeating lace pattern that extends across the full length, creating a meditative knitting experience suitable for intermediate to advanced knitters seeking a project with visual interest and complexity.

Yarn Weight and Material Options

Mokita accommodates multiple yarn weights, including aran, worsted, and laceweight options, making it highly adaptable to yarn stash and personal preference. The design was originally conceived using soft silk and mohair blends, though knitters are encouraged to experiment with alternative fiber combinations. The pattern supports finishing options such as smooth silk yarn for border definition or contrast yarn selections for visual impact.

Design Variations and Sizing

The pattern provides two primary construction paths:

  • Aran Version: Finished dimensions of 192 cm / 72 inches in length (including crochet border) and 59 cm / 23 inches in width, worked at a gauge of 24 stitches by 22 rows over 10 cm / 4 inches in lace stitch after blocking
  • Laceweight Version: Finished dimensions of 165 cm / 65 inches in length and 78 cm / 30 inches in width, worked at a gauge of 14 stitches by 16 rows over 10 cm / 4 inches in lace stitch after blocking

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Mokita employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that create visual complexity while maintaining a soothing, meditative rhythm. The core construction utilizes knitted lace worked from charts or written instructions, requiring knitters to read and interpret lace patterns. The pattern incorporates fundamental lace-making skills including increasing and decreasing to shape the shawl and create the openwork design.

Border options provide additional customization: knitters may choose between a garter stitch border for a traditional finish or a crochet border for textural contrast. These border techniques can be executed in the main yarn or a contrasting color and fiber type for enhanced definition.

Optional Embellishments

The pattern supports optional bead addition to increase the glamour factor and visual richness of the finished shawl. This technique allows knitters to personalize the design and create heirloom-quality pieces suitable for special occasions.

Skill Level and Knitting Experience

Mokita is rated for experienced or adventurous knitters, making it an intermediate-level project. The combination of lace pattern reading, gauge-dependent construction, and finishing options makes this shawl suitable for knitters with solid foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and customization choices.
