Moda Fabrics True Luck Quilt – Free Downloadable PDF Pattern Summary

The True Luck Quilt is a 52" x 65" patchwork quilt pattern designed by Stephanie Ryan for Moda Fabrics, featuring fabrics from the True Luck Collection. This is a free downloadable PDF pattern rated at an intermediate difficulty level, making it an excellent project for quilters who are comfortable with basic piecing and are ready to work with multiple fabric cuts and block assembly across several rows.

About the True Luck Quilt Design

The finished quilt measures 52 inches wide by 65 inches tall, making it a generous lap quilt or a cozy throw size. The design uses a structured, repeating block layout built from rectangles and squares, assembled into rows that create a cohesive, rhythmic pattern across the quilt top. The color palette draws on the signature hues of the True Luck Collection — a cheerful mix of assorted turquoise and lavender prints balanced against light grey and grey print fabrics, giving the finished quilt a fresh, modern aesthetic.

Techniques Used

  • Strip cutting: Fabric is cut into width-of-fabric (WOF) strips before being subcutted into individual pieces, which is a highly efficient approach to managing multiple fabric cuts accurately.
  • Subcut piecing: Strips are subcutted into precise rectangles and squares, including 5½" squares (A), 3½" x 5½" rectangles (B), 3½" x 9½" rectangles (C), and 3½" x 5½" rectangles (D).
  • Block construction: Two distinct block types are assembled — Row One blocks and Row Two blocks — each built from a specific combination of the lettered pieces.
  • Seam allowance pressing: The pattern specifies pressing seam allowances in particular directions for each block type, which is essential for achieving flat, well-aligned seams and precise block intersections.
  • Row assembly: Completed blocks are sewn together into rows, and rows are then joined to form the full quilt top — a classic straight-set quilt construction method.

Block Construction Details

Row One Block

The Row One block is constructed by sewing a grey print rectangle (B) onto opposite sides of a turquoise or lavender square (A). A light grey rectangle (C) is then sewn onto the left side of the A-B unit. Seam allowances are pressed toward piece C. Each completed Row One block measures 8" x 8" (unfinished). Six blocks are sewn together to form a complete Row One.

Row Two Block

The Row Two block is formed by sewing an assorted turquoise or lavender rectangle (D) to a turquoise or lavender square (A), with seam allowances pressed toward piece D. Each completed Row Two block also measures 8" x 8" (unfinished). Six blocks are sewn together to form a Row Two, with one additional rectangle D sewn to the end of the row to complete it. Four rows of this type are made.
