Moda Fabrics Sentiments Quilt Pattern Summary

The Moda Fabrics Sentiments Quilt is a downloadable PDF quilting pattern designed by Moda Fabrics for intermediate-level quilters. The finished quilt measures 55" x 64", making it a generous lap or throw size suitable for home décor or gifting. This free pattern guides quilters through constructing a structured, framed panel block design with a charming, sentiment-inspired aesthetic that is characteristic of the Moda Fabrics style.

About the Quilt Design

The Sentiments Quilt is built around a repeating panel block construction, with each block featuring two distinct framing borders — an inner frame and an outer frame — surrounded by a coordinating background fabric. The result is a neatly organized, medallion-style block layout that gives the quilt a classic, polished appearance. The use of multiple coordinating prints in green, blue, and red creates a lively yet cohesive color palette typical of Moda Fabrics collections.

The quilt is composed of 16 individual panel blocks, each carefully framed and assembled before being set into the larger quilt top. This block-repeat format is well suited to intermediate quilters who are comfortable with precise cutting, consistent seam allowances, and careful pressing techniques.

Quilt Construction and Techniques

Panel Blocks

The foundation of the quilt is a set of 16 panel blocks, each cut to 5½" x 7¾". These blocks serve as the central focal point of each unit. Quilters are instructed to always press seams away from the block center to reduce bulk and ensure flat, even seams throughout the quilt top.

Inner Block Frame

Each panel block receives an inner framing border cut from three green prints and one blue print. From each of these four fabrics, quilters cut strips measuring 1½" x 22" from the width of fabric (WOF), which are then subcutted into two sizes:

  • 8 pieces at 1½" x 7½" per fabric
  • 8 pieces at 1½" x 7¾" per fabric

The pattern includes an important note for quilters: keep the inner frame pieces together carefully, as the two subcut sizes differ by only ¼". Mixing these up can cause misalignment in the finished block, so organization is key at this stage.

Outer Block Frame

A second, outer framing border is added using four red prints. From each red print, quilters again cut 1½" x 22" strips from the WOF, subcutting them into:

  • 8 pieces at 1½" x 9½" per fabric
  • 8 pieces at 1½" x 9¾" per fabric

As with the inner frame, the pattern cautions quilters to be especially careful when adding the green, red, and blue borders, since the panel lengths on the sides versus the top and bottom can differ, with seam allowances of only ¼" separating the two measurements. Precision cutting and careful labeling of pieces is strongly recommended.

Background Fabric

The background fabric ties the framed blocks together within the quilt layout. Quilters cut the following from the background fabric:

  • 1 strip at 11¾" x WOF, subcutted into 12 pieces at 11¾" x 1½"
  • 8 strips at 1½" x WOF, subcutted into:
    • 2 pieces at 1½" x 41½"
    • 3 pieces at 1½" x 39½" (sewn together to yield longer strips)
    • 2 pieces at 1½" x 48½"

These background strips are used to sash and frame the assembled blocks within the overall quilt layout, creating the structured grid that defines the finished 55" x 64" quilt top.
