Moda Fabrics Plow Time Bib – Quilted Baby Bib Pattern Summary

The Plow Time Bib is a charming quilted baby bib pattern from Moda Fabrics, featuring an appliquéd tractor scene complete with wheels, a steering wheel, a seat, an engine, headlights, and bold lettering. The design draws on the whimsical Barnyard Buddies fabric collection, bringing a playful farmyard aesthetic to a functional, wearable project. This is a downloadable PDF pattern rated at an intermediate difficulty level, making it an ideal next step for quilters who are comfortable with basic piecing and ready to explore fusible appliqué techniques.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a quilted fabric bib sized for a baby or young toddler. The front of the bib is pieced together from several coordinating fabrics to create a scenic background — a sky, a strip of decorative print, and a grassy foreground — on top of which a detailed tractor appliqué is fused and stitched. The bib closes at the back of the neck using two ¾" Velcro circles, making it practical for everyday use. The backing is a single piece of fabric, and the entire bib is finished with a coordinating binding for a neat, professional edge.

Fabrics and Materials Used

This pattern is specifically designed around the Barnyard Buddies fabric collection by Moda Fabrics. The following fabrics are called for:

  • Sky Blue Crop Circles (13073-18) – 11" x 11" piece used for the main background sky area
  • Sky Blue Barnyard Chatter (13072-12) – 1" x 11" strip used as part of the background
  • Grass Green Hay Bales (13074-13) – 4" x 11" piece used for the grassy foreground background
  • Barn Red Barnyard Chatter (13072-11) – used in multiple roles: 11" x 15" for the backing, 3" x 6" for the tractor appliqué body, and ½ yard for the binding
  • Black Cow Barnyard Chatter (13072-17) – 4" x 6" piece used for the tractor wheel appliqués
  • Black fabric – 3" x 12" piece used for the letters, steering wheel, seat, and engine appliqués
  • White fabric – 2" x 5" piece used for the inside of the wheels and the headlight
  • Muslin – 2" x 5" piece used to back the white tractor pieces for stability

Additional notions and supplies include:

  • 1/3 yard of paper-backed fusible web – specifically Steam-a-Seam 2® is recommended for adhering all appliqué pieces
  • Mettler™ #3 black embroidery thread – used for decorative stitching on the appliqué elements
  • Black cotton/polyester thread – used for general sewing and construction
  • Two ¾" Velcro circles – used as the bib's neck closure

Techniques Used

The Plow Time Bib combines several core quilting and sewing techniques into a compact, beginner-friendly appliqué project:

  • Fabric piecing – The bib front is assembled from multiple fabric strips and blocks sewn together with a consistent ¼" seam allowance, a standard quilting seam. Seams are pressed toward the darker fabric after each step, following traditional quilting practice to reduce bulk and keep seam lines crisp.
  • Fusible web appliqué – All tractor elements — including the body, wheels, seat, steering wheel, engine, headlight, and lettering — are cut from fabric and adhered to the bib front using Steam-a-Seam 2® paper-backed fusible web. This technique involves tracing shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web, fusing it to the wrong side of the chosen fabric, cutting
