Moda Fabrics Charm Monday Quilt Pattern

Project Overview

The Charm Monday Quilt is an intermediate-level quilting project designed by Moda Fabrics. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished quilt measuring 58 inches by 83 inches, making it an ideal size for a lap quilt or throw. The design celebrates the versatility of charm packs, which are pre-cut fabric bundles that showcase a coordinated collection of prints and solids in varying light and dark values.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a pieced quilt top featuring a combination of charm squares, rectangles, and pieced units arranged to create visual interest through the interplay of light and dark fabrics. The quilt incorporates 164 light fabric units and 186 dark fabric units, creating a balanced yet dynamic composition that highlights the variety within a single fabric collection.

Fabric Requirements and Materials

Quilters can construct this project using one of two methods:

  • Charm Pack Method: 9 charm packs (pre-cut 5-inch by 5-inch squares, approximately 40 squares per pack with an assumed equal mix of light and dark fabrics)
  • Fat Quarter Method: 14 light fat quarters and 16 dark fat quarters for greater fabric selection flexibility

Additional materials include ⅝ yard of fabric for binding and 5 yards of fabric for the quilt backing. All seam allowances in the pattern are based on a standard ¼-inch seam allowance.

Cutting Instructions

The cutting process is organized by fabric type and unit size:

  • Light Fabric Cutting: From 70 light charm squares, cut 140 rectangles measuring 2½ inches by 4½ inches. From the remaining 70 light squares, cut 280 squares measuring 2½ inches by 2½ inches.
  • Dark Fabric Cutting: From 70 dark charm squares, cut 140 rectangles measuring 2½ inches by 4½ inches. From 116 additional dark squares, create 116 pieced units through a specific construction method.
  • Binding Preparation: Cut 8 strips measuring 2½ inches by the width of fabric (WOF, approximately 42 inches) for binding.

Pieced Charm Square Technique

A distinctive feature of this pattern is the creation of pieced charm squares. This technique involves taking two 5-inch by 5-inch charm squares, placing them right sides together, and stitching a scant ¼-inch seam around the outside edges. The sewn unit is then cut in half diagonally and pressed open, yielding two finished pieced charm units measuring 4½ inches by 5 inches with visible seams creating a two-fabric composition. The pattern requires 116 of these pieced charm units.

Quilting Techniques and Construction

The Charm Monday Quilt employs fundamental piecing techniques suitable for intermediate quilters. The combination of simple rectangles, squares, and the pieced charm units creates a pattern that develops visual complexity through fabric value contrast rather than intricate piecing. The use of charm packs emphasizes the charm of charm quilts—the inherent mix of coordinated fabrics and the interplay between light and dark values that create depth and movement in the finished quilt.

Skill Level and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate project, this quilt is appropriate for quilters with basic piecing experience. The pattern involves straightforward cutting, standard ¼-inch seaming, and pressing techniques. The main construction challenge involves managing the numerous small units and maintaining consistent seam allowances throughout the assembly process.
