Product Description
Growing up one of my favorite tv shows was “Mod Squad” which aired from 1968–1973. The Mod Squad, was the grooviest shows of all time! ✌🌸 So, in one of my more nostalgic moods, I decided to design and title a dishcloth pattern in their honor.
Mod Kitchen Dishcloth by Joan Laws
Project Overview
The Mod Kitchen Dishcloth is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Joan Laws that creates a finished square measuring 8" x 8". This intermediate-level project combines worsted-weight cotton yarn in a two-color knit construction to produce a modern, geometric dishcloth suitable for kitchen use. The pattern employs a structured color-work technique using alternating knit stitches in contrasting colors to build a distinctive mod-inspired design.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a single kitchen dishcloth—a practical, everyday textile item designed for washing dishes and cleaning kitchen surfaces. The finished piece is a compact 8" x 8" square, making it an efficient project for crafters seeking quick results while still engaging with intermediate-level techniques. The mod aesthetic creates visual interest through geometric color blocking, elevating a functional household item into a decorative accent piece.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
- Yarn: Lily Sugar'n Cream, 100% cotton, 120 yards per 70.9 grams
- Color A: #00001 White
- Color B: 00002 Black
- Needles: US 6 (4.25mm) or size needed to achieve proper gauge
- Gauge: 20 stitches over 4 inches in stitch pattern
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Mod Kitchen Dishcloth employs two-color knitting as its primary construction technique, where yarn colors are alternated throughout the pattern to create geometric designs without the need for stranding or intarsia methods. This approach keeps the fabric relatively flat and maintains consistent drape, ideal for dishcloths.
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit stitches worked in both colors throughout the rows. The construction begins with a cast-on of 40 stitches and incorporates color-work sequences where knit stitches alternate between Color A and Color B in structured repeats. The pattern features rows of stockinette stitch variations created through the systematic placement of knit stitches in alternating colors.
The stitch pattern involves repeat sequences—marked by asterisks in the written instructions—that allow crafters to establish rhythm and maintain consistency across the width of the dishcloth. Purl stitches (indicated by "p" in the pattern) are used strategically on wrong-side rows to create texture and definition in the finished piece. The pattern requires attention to color changes within rows, where the knitter must switch between Color A and Color B while maintaining even tension and consistent stitch size.
The intermediate difficulty level reflects the need for crafters to manage color transitions smoothly, maintain accurate stitch counts across complex repeat patterns, and read written instructions that specify color placement on both right-side and wrong-side rows. This pattern builds skills in color awareness and multi-color knitting without requiring advanced techniques like Fair Isle or cable work.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with a two-row garter stitch border in Color A, establishing a finished edge. The main pattern section then introduces the two-color work through a series of rows that build the mod geometric design. Each row specifies which color to knit and which stitches to purl, creating a deliberate visual pattern that emerges as the dishcloth grows. The repeating sequences allow the crafter to establish a rhythm while building the 8" x 8" finished square.
