Product Description
This cute and soft toy is knitted in the rounds from the bottom to the top. The wings are knitted separately and sewn on later.
The owl is approximately 8” (20cm) tall
You will need less than a ball each of two different colors yarn in sport to medium worsted weight. Also you will need a small amount of red or light brown yarn for beak.
Or you could use a nice self striping yarn if not doing the stranded colorwork/fair isle.
The pattern is written row by row, with photos and charts for the stranded colorwork.
Miranda, the Owl by Stana D. Sortor
What is Being Made
Miranda is a handmade knitted toy owl designed by Stana D. Sortor. This finished stuffed animal measures approximately 8 inches (20 centimeters) tall, making it an ideal size for a decorative toy or gift. The project creates a three-dimensional plush owl character suitable for children or as a decorative piece.
Yarn and Materials
This knitting project requires less than one ball each of two different colors of yarn in sport to medium worsted weight for the main body and head. An additional small amount of red or light brown yarn is needed for the beak. Alternatively, crafters can substitute a self-striping yarn if they prefer to avoid stranded colorwork or fair isle techniques. The toy is stuffed with polyester fiberfill (one small bag) and features two buttons or safety eyes for the face.
Needles and Tools
The recommended needles for this project are double-pointed needles in US size #3/3.25mm, sold as a set of five. Additional notions required include a yarn needle, crochet hook, scissors, stitch marker, stitch holder, polyester fiberfill, and either two decorative buttons or two safety eyes for the owl's facial features.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Miranda uses fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for toy construction. The pattern employs knit stitches as the primary stitch throughout the project. Key techniques include:
- KFB (Knit in Front and Back) – This increase stitch creates 2 stitches from 1 stitch, used to shape the toy's body and head
- SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) – This decrease stitch reduces 2 stitches to 1 stitch, allowing for shaping and tapering
- Stranded colorwork or fair isle – Optional technique for creating color patterns, though self-striping yarn can be substituted to avoid this method
- Pick-up and knit – Used to construct the three-dimensional body by picking up stitches along the cast-on edge
- Stuffing and assembly – The toy is constructed in pieces and assembled with fiberfill stuffing
Construction Method
The pattern begins by casting on 15 stitches with the main color yarn on double-pointed needles. The body and head are constructed by knitting the initial row, then turning the work upside down to pick up and knit 15 additional stitches along the cast-on edge. This technique creates a tubular foundation for the three-dimensional toy structure. Gauge will vary depending on the specific yarn used, so crafters should be prepared to adjust needle sizes if necessary to achieve proper fabric density for stuffing.
