Product Description

For this minions inspired tablet or I-pad cover you will need approximately 1 ball each of medium worsted yarn in yellow and blue (for my minions cover I used Bernat Handicrafter cotton in lemon and blueberry color), remnants of white, black and grey colored yarn, and two buttons. The pattern is knitted from the bottom up in the round, with goggles knitted separately and sewn on.

Tablet cover is 8 ¼” (21cm) wide and 11 ½” (29cm) long. I-pad cover is 8 ¼” (21cm) wide and 9 ½” (24cm) long.

Minions Tablet or I-Pad Cover by Stana D. Sortor

Project Overview

This is a knitted cover designed to protect tablets and I-pads, inspired by the beloved minion characters from the movie Despicable Me 2. The pattern creates a charming accessory that combines practical functionality with playful character design, making it an ideal project for fans of the film and knitting enthusiasts alike.

Finished Dimensions

The pattern includes two size options to accommodate different devices:

  • Tablet cover: 8 ¼ inches (21 centimeters) wide by 11 ½ inches (29 centimeters) long
  • I-pad cover: 8 ¼ inches (21 centimeters) wide by 9 ½ inches (24 centimeters) long

Yarn Requirements and Materials

This project uses worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and creates a sturdy fabric ideal for a protective cover. The designer used Bernat Handicrafter cotton in lemon and blueberry colors, though any worsted weight yarn in these colors will work. You will need approximately one ball each of yellow and blue yarn, plus small remnants of white, black, and grey yarn for details and facial features.

Needles and Notions

The cover is worked in the round using double pointed needles (DPN) in US size #3/3.25mm, available in a set of 5. Alternatively, you may use your preferred method for working in the round, such as circular needles or the magic loop technique. Additional notions required include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, a stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds, a stitch holder for holding stitches temporarily, and two buttons for embellishment or closure.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The cover is constructed by working in rounds, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric perfect for a fitted cover. Two key decreasing and increasing stitches are used throughout the pattern:

  • SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease that reduces two stitches to one stitch by slipping two stitches knitwise, then knitting them together
  • KFB (Knit Front and Back): An increase stitch that creates two stitches from a single stitch by knitting into both the front and back loops of the same stitch

These techniques allow the knitter to shape the cover and create the distinctive minion silhouette. The pattern likely incorporates stockinette stitch as the primary fabric stitch, combined with color work or intarsia to create the minion features and details.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner project, this pattern is accessible to knitters who have mastered basic knitting skills including casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off. The use of straightforward stitches and the structured approach to working in the round make this an excellent project for building confidence in round knitting techniques.
