This Minion inspired Phone or I-phone cover is 3.5” (9cm) wide and 6 ½” (16cm) long. You will need less than a ball of medium worsted yarn in yellow and blue (for my minions I used Bernat Handicrafter cotton in lemon and blueberry color), remnants of white, black and grey colored yarn. 1 button

What is Being Made
This is a knitted phone or iPhone cover designed to fit standard mobile devices. The finished cover measures 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) wide and 6½ inches (16 centimeters) long, making it suitable for most smartphones. The design features a minion character aesthetic, created through colorwork and embellishment techniques. The pattern is adjustable—additional rows can be added to accommodate longer phone models as needed.
Yarn and Materials
The project uses worsted weight yarn in multiple colors. The primary colors are yellow and blue for the minion body, with additional remnants of white, black, and grey yarn for details and features. The original design was created using Bernat Handicrafter cotton in lemon and blueberry colorways, though any medium worsted weight yarn in these colors will work. One button is required as a notional element to complete the design.
Needles and Tools
This pattern is worked using double-pointed needles (DPN) in US size #5 (3.75mm), typically a set of five needles. The pattern notes that knitters can use their preferred method for working in the round as an alternative. Additional tools needed include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, and a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The cover is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch pattern used is seed stitch, which creates a textured, bumpy fabric ideal for adding visual interest and dimension to the phone cover.
The pattern incorporates several essential knitting decreases and increases to shape the cover:
- SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit)—A left-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one by slipping two stitches knitwise, then knitting them together
- K2tog (Knit Two Together)—A right-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one
- K3tog (Knit Three Together)—A decrease that combines three stitches into one, used for more dramatic shaping
- KFB (Knit Front and Back)—An increase that creates two stitches from one by knitting into both the front and back loops of the same stitch
The cover is worked in the round using the double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction without requiring seaming. This method is particularly efficient for small, cylindrical projects like phone covers. The combination of decreases and increases allows the knitter to shape the cover to fit snugly around a phone while maintaining the minion character design through colorwork and embellishment.
