Mermish Socks by Laura Fahlin Designs

Project Overview

Mermish Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for fingering-weight socks designed by Laura Fahlin. This intermediate-level sock pattern is available in three sizes—Small, Medium, and Large—with finished circumferences of approximately 7.5, 8.25, and 9 inches (19, 21, and 23 cm) respectively when unstretched. The pattern uses a classic sock construction method ideal for knitters with foundational circular knitting experience.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a pair of fitted socks designed to be worn close to the foot. The socks feature a structured cuff section that alternates between stockinette and ribbed knitting to create texture and ensure a secure fit around the ankle. The three available sizes accommodate different foot circumferences, making the pattern suitable for various wearers from children to adults.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Approximately 360 to 400 yards (330 to 365 meters) of fingering-weight sock yarn, depending on size. The pattern sample shown uses Socks that Rock Lightweight in the colorway Oscar's Grouchy Green (405 yards per 146 grams).
  • Needles: US 1 (2.25 mm) circular needles or the size required to achieve proper gauge.
  • Notions: Stitch markers and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 32 stitches and 48 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit. Cast-on stitch counts are 60 stitches for Small, 66 stitches for Medium, and 72 stitches for Large.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Mermish Socks employs several fundamental sock-knitting techniques. The pattern begins with the Double Start Cast-On, a method that creates an elastic foundation ideal for sock cuffs. The socks are constructed using in-the-round knitting on circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless garment.

The cuff section showcases textural variety through alternating pattern rows. The pattern incorporates stockinette stitch (knit stitches worked in the round) and reverse stockinette (purl stitches in the round) to create visual interest. A ribbed section using a knit-one, purl-one (K1, P1) pattern provides elasticity and helps the cuff conform to the leg.

The pattern uses standard sock-knitting abbreviations and techniques including knit two together (K2tog) and purl two together (P2tog) for decreasing, slip stitches for shaping, and pass slipped stitch over (PSSO) for additional decreasing methods. Stitch markers are used to denote the beginning of each round, a critical element in circular knitting.

Cuff Construction

The cuff begins with a series of alternating knit and purl rounds that establish the sock's foundation. Rounds 1 through 4 introduce the basic texture pattern, with stockinette alternating with ribbed knitting. This sequence repeats to build the cuff height, with additional rounds of stockinette and purl stitches added before the pattern transitions to the leg section. This construction method creates a cuff that is both visually interesting and functionally elastic.

Difficulty Level

Classified as intermediate, Mermish Socks is appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic knitting skills and have experience with circular needle techniques. The pattern assumes familiarity with in-the-round knitting, stitch markers, and fundamental decreasing methods. Knitters new to sock construction may benefit from prior experience with similar projects.
