Product Description
This top begins with a provisional CO about 1”/ 2.5cm below the waistline. The body is worked in the round to the armholes, then the Front and Back are divided and worked separately back and forth. Purl i-cord is worked at the edges, sometimes as you go and sometimes added on. The ruffled lace hem is worked down from the provisional CO sts. A purl i-cord laced through the shoulder and back neck hems pulls it all together, and decorative buttons may be added to the faux button band.

What Is Being Made
Meridian is a knitted top designed by Renate Kamm, available in sizes XS through 5XL with finished bust measurements ranging from 32 inches (81 cm) to 66 inches (167.5 cm). This garment is designed to be worn with 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) of positive ease at the bust and 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20.5 cm) of positive ease at the bottom hem, creating a relaxed, comfortable fit suitable for various body types and styling preferences.
Knitting Techniques
The Meridian top is constructed using circular knitting techniques, worked in the round from the bottom up. The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on using heavier weight scrap yarn and larger needles, which allows for later pick-up and finishing of the lower edge. Knitters transition to gauge needles and working yarn after the initial setup rounds, then continue working in the round using a stitch marker to denote the beginning of round. The construction method involves working stockinette stitch as the primary fabric, with a set-up round that divides stitches for the body shaping.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch — the main fabric stitch, worked in the round to create a smooth, classic knit surface
- Knit Stitches — used in the set-up round and throughout the body construction
- Provisional Cast-On — a temporary cast-on method that allows stitches to be picked up later for finishing
Materials and Gauge
Meridian is designed for 4-ply weight yarn worked at a gauge of 24 stitches and 38 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in blocked stockinette stitch. The pattern requires US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) or longer, or double-pointed needles, for working at gauge. A larger needle size, US 4 (3.5 mm), is used for the provisional cast-on. The cast-on involves a long-tail or stretchy cast-on method with a minimum 4-inch (10 cm) tail left for finishing purposes.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, gauge work, and basic shaping techniques. The use of provisional cast-on and in-the-round construction requires comfort with these intermediate methods.
