Marlion Felted Crochet Amigurumi Lion by Fiona Kelly

What is Being Made

Marlion is a felted crochet amigurumi lion toy designed by Fiona Kelly. This is a three-dimensional stuffed toy lion crafted using the amigurumi technique, a Japanese method of crocheting small, stuffed fabric sculptures. The finished lion stands approximately 27.5 centimeters (11 inches) tall when seated, measured from the base to the top of the head, excluding the mane. This downloadable PDF pattern is suitable for intermediate-level crocheters and creates a charming pet toy or decorative piece.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Marlion pattern employs the amigurumi technique, which involves crocheting in continuous rounds to create seamless, three-dimensional forms. This method requires working with stitch markers to track the beginning of each round and maintaining consistent tension throughout the piece. The pattern utilizes felting techniques with pure wool yarn, which allows the finished crocheted fabric to be deliberately shrunk and matted through washing to create a denser, more finished appearance. The combination of crochet construction with post-project felting adds depth and a professional quality to the final toy.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch abbreviations, the amigurumi construction typically employs fundamental crochet stitches including single crochet as the primary stitch for building the three-dimensional forms. The pattern requires understanding of increasing and decreasing stitches to shape the lion's head, body, legs, and mane. Sewn seams using sewing thread and needle join various components together, and a darning needle is used for weaving in yarn ends and adding fine details such as facial features.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Marlion pattern calls for 340 grams of Kauni Effectgarten EQ Rainbow pure wool 4ply (fingering weight) yarn as the primary material, or similar feltable pure wool yarn of equivalent weight. Additional materials include small amounts of white and black pure wool yarn for details. A 5mm (USA 'H') crochet hook is required for working with the 4ply yarn weight. The toy is stuffed with polyfill or similar polyester fiberfill, with optional plastic pellet filling for added weight and realistic movement—though pellet filling should be avoided if the toy will be given to small children due to choking hazards. Additional supplies include an amigurumi stitch marker for tracking rounds, sharp scissors, medium grey sewing thread with a sharp sewing needle for assembly, and a darning needle for finishing details.

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

The pattern specifies 4ply (fingering weight) yarn, which is a fine yarn weight that produces detailed, tightly-worked amigurumi with good stitch definition. The use of pure wool is essential to this pattern because wool's natural fiber properties allow it to felt effectively when subjected to heat and agitation during washing. The Kauni Effectgarten EQ Rainbow yarn selected for this project offers color variation and visual interest while maintaining the feltable qualities necessary for the finished toy's appearance and durability.

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Marlion pattern assumes crocheters have foundational skills in basic stitches and are comfortable with amigurumi construction methods. The pattern requires ability to work in continuous rounds, manage stitch markers, perform increases and decreases, and assemble multiple crocheted pieces. The additional felting step adds complexity beyond basic crochet, as it requires understanding how to properly felt wool yarn to achieve the desired finished appearance and texture.
