What is Being Made

Mariee is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by independent designer Allison Janocha. The finished socks are sized to fit approximately 8" to 9" foot circumference, with customizable foot length. The pattern is written for intermediate knitters and uses the Magic Loop method, though it can be adapted for other circular knitting techniques.

Knitting Techniques

This sock pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate skill levels. The socks are worked in the round using circular needles with the Magic Loop method, which allows knitters to work seamlessly without seams. The pattern divides stitches between two needles: Needle 1 holds the front and instep stitches while Needle 2 holds the back and sole stitches. Knitters uncomfortable with Magic Loop can easily adapt the pattern to use other circular knitting methods. The pattern notes that due to the large number of stitches involved, using five double-pointed needles is recommended over four for improved stitch management and tension control.

Stitches Used

The Mariee sock pattern incorporates basic knit and purl stitches to create textured stitch patterns. The cuff features a repeating pattern that combines knit and purl stitches in a structured sequence: (k3, p2, k2, p4, k2, p2, k3) repeated four times around. This creates visual interest and helps the cuff maintain elasticity. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch, which is the foundation stitch for most sock construction.

Materials and Gauge

Mariee is worked with fingering weight sock yarn, which is a standard choice for sock knitting due to its durability and drape. One skein of approximately 400 yards is sufficient for most sizes, though knitters with larger feet may require additional yardage. The pattern is worked on US Size 1 (2.25 mm) needles or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. The required gauge is 32 stitches and 48 rows in 4 inches when measured in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the socks to fit correctly; knitters can adjust the finished dimensions by changing their gauge as needed.

Pattern Construction

The pattern begins with casting on 72 stitches, which are then joined for working in the round while taking care not to twist the cast-on edge. The stitches are divided evenly across needles, with 36 stitches on each needle. The cuff section spans rounds 1 through 10, with the textured knit-purl pattern repeated throughout. The leg section follows the cuff, continuing the structured construction of the sock.
