Manzanita Tam by Chrissy Gardiner

What Is Being Made

The Manzanita Tam is a women's knitted hat designed by Chrissy Gardiner for T-SPOT in Manzanita, Oregon. This intermediate-level tam is sized to fit head circumferences of 20-22 inches (Women's S-M) and draws inspiration from the ocean waves that lap the beaches of this picturesque coastal town. The tam is an ideal accessory for keeping your head warm during stormy weather while maintaining a classic, elegant silhouette.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs stranded colorwork as its primary technique, incorporating two colors throughout the design to create a wave-inspired motif. The tam is constructed using the circular knitting method, worked in the round from the cast-on edge upward. The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on using the contrast color, then transitions to the main color to establish the body of the hat. Circular needles are used for the main sections, with double-pointed needles employed for the crown decreases as the circumference becomes too small for circular needles.

Stitches Used

The foundational stitch structure includes knit and purl stitches arranged in a k1, p1 ribbing pattern for the cuff. The body features a stranded colorwork pattern that creates the ocean wave-inspired design through the strategic placement of the main color and contrast color stitches. Decreases are worked to shape the crown of the tam as you progress toward the top of the hat.

Materials

  • Yarn: DK-weight yarn, approximately 100 yards in main color (MC) and 85 yards in contrast color (CC). The sample uses Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend in color #3043 (juniper) for the main color and color #3019 (dove) for the contrast color.
  • Needles: One 16-inch size 4 (3.5mm) circular needle and one set of five size 4 (3.5mm) double-pointed needles
  • Additional Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends and at least one stitch marker for marking the beginning of rounds
  • Gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rounds equal 4 inches in the stranded colorwork pattern on size 4 needles
