Product Description
The Monkey Puzzle scarf was inspired by the ladder like arrangement of branches of the Monkey Puzzle tree, reproduced here in simple knit and purl stitches. In an aran weight yarn, it is a cosy scarf to keep you warm in cold weather. The Manx Loaghtan yarn used in the pattern is exclusive to Natural Born Dyers, and was spun for us by the Halifax Spinning Mill, using the clip from a flock of conservation grazing sheep that Jon was involved in looking after.
Manx Monkey Puzzle Scarf by Claire Valentine
What is Being Made
The Manx Monkey Puzzle Scarf is a cosy knitted scarf designed to keep you warm in cold weather. Inspired by the distinctive ladder-like arrangement of branches found on Monkey Puzzle trees, this scarf translates the natural geometric pattern into a wearable textile design using fundamental knitting techniques.
Design Inspiration and Pattern History
This pattern was originally published in the Co-operative Press book Fresh Designs: Scarves as a chunky weight yarn design. Claire Valentine has reworked the pattern specifically for aran weight yarn, making it more accessible while maintaining the visual impact of the original design. The scarf showcases how natural inspiration can be successfully adapted into textile patterns through thoughtful yarn weight selection.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Monkey Puzzle Scarf employs simple and straightforward knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern relies on the fundamental contrast between knit and purl stitches to create the visual ladder-like motif that references the tree's branching structure. This approach demonstrates how effective texture and pattern can be achieved through basic stitch manipulation rather than complex colorwork or advanced techniques.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch – forms the primary fabric base
- Purl stitch – creates textural contrast and defines the ladder pattern
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Natural Born Dyers Manx Loaghtan Aran yarn. This yarn is composed of 100% Manx Loaghtan wool in aran weight, with each skein weighing 100g and providing 172 meters of yardage. The Manx Loaghtan yarn used in this pattern is exclusive to Natural Born Dyers and was spun by the Halifax Spinning Mill using fleece from a conservation grazing sheep flock.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires 6mm / US 10 circular needles, which are appropriately sized for aran weight yarn and facilitate the creation of the scarf's fabric with proper stitch definition.
Yarn Weight and Finished Properties
By using aran weight yarn instead of the original chunky weight, this reworked pattern creates a scarf with excellent drape and warmth while maintaining the clarity of the knit and purl stitch pattern. Aran weight provides a balanced middle ground – substantial enough for winter wear yet refined enough to showcase the geometric ladder motif clearly.
