Product Description

A classy little shrug with cable detailing on the back raglan and sleeve/front edges, this piece works up quickly in a worsted weight yarn.

I really like the raglan armholes on the back of this shrug instead of just working a large rectangle because you get a better fit and no tight pulling at the bottom of the armholes.

The back tail is worked first, then make the sleeves are worked flat to the underarm. The pieces are joined to work the yoke all in one piece. Raglan shaping is worked at the back armhole only.

What Is Being Made

The Maiden Shrug is an intermediate-level knitted shrug designed as a standard-fitting garment available in six sizes ranging from XS to 2XL. This piece features a distinctive design with twist stitch faux cable panels positioned on each side of the back and on each sleeve, creating visual interest and texture throughout the garment. The shrug includes a collar and is designed to be worn as a layering piece, with finished back bust widths ranging from 16 inches for the smallest size to 26 inches for the largest size.

Sizing and Fit

The Maiden Shrug is sized to fit bust measurements from 28–30 inches up to 48–50 inches. The pattern recommends choosing a size where the back bust measurement is 1–2 inches larger than half of your actual bust measurement for a standard, comfortable fit. Back length measurements, including the collar, range from 13¾ inches for the XS size to 16¼ inches for the 2XL size. The garment shown in the pattern photography is knitted in size Small.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level project employs twist stitch techniques to create faux cable panels, a method that produces the appearance of cables without the complexity of traditional cable knitting. Twist stitches involve crossing stitches over one another to create twisted, textured columns that run vertically down the sides of the back and along each sleeve. This technique adds visual depth and sophistication to the design while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The use of faux cables rather than traditional cables makes this shrug a good project for knitters looking to expand their stitch repertoire without tackling the more advanced cable-crossing techniques.

Yarn and Materials

The Maiden Shrug is knitted using worsted weight yarn, also known as Medium #4 weight yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 466 yards for the XS size to 764 yards for the 2XL size. The pattern photograph features Plymouth Yarn Company Coffee Beenz, a blend of 75% acrylic and 25% wool that offers durability and warmth. This yarn is available in 3½ ounce balls with approximately 214 yards per ball. The specific color shown is #945. Knitters will need appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn to complete this project, though specific needle sizes are detailed within the full pattern instructions.

Pattern Structure

Instructions in the pattern are written for the smallest size (XS), with larger sizes provided in parentheses throughout. When only a single number appears without parenthetical alternatives, that measurement or instruction applies to all sizes. This format allows knitters to easily track their specific size while following a single set of directions, making the pattern accessible and straightforward to navigate.
