Product Description
nCity lights and busy streets stretch out for miles in New York - but there’s something magical in all the photos I’ve seen of Madison Square. And maybe, there’s something magical in a trusty, cabled hat, too.
Madison Square Light is the fingering weight version of my trusty Madison Square Beanie, which was designed out of worsted weight yarn. This beanie is the perfect lightweight accessory - it’s easy to roll up and keep in your bag for the next time a chilly wind strikes!

Madison Square Beanie Light by Ash Christine
What is Being Made
The Madison Square Beanie Light is a lightweight, rolled-brim beanie designed as the fingering weight version of the original Madison Square Beanie. This accessory draws inspiration from the iconic Madison Square area of New York City, combining practical functionality with a touch of urban magic. The beanie is compact and portable, making it ideal for keeping in a bag for unexpected chilly weather.
Craft and Difficulty Level
This is an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for knitters with some experience. The pattern requires understanding of cable techniques and working with fingering weight yarn, which demands attention to detail and consistent tension.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Madison Square Beanie Light features cable stitches as a primary design element, creating visual interest and texture throughout the hat. The beanie is designed to be worked in the round, which is a fundamental technique for hat construction. The pattern includes a rolled brim, which is created through stockinette stitch that naturally curls when worked in the round.
Materials
- Yarn Weight: Fingering weight yarn (the lighter-weight alternative to the worsted weight version)
- Needles: Appropriate needles for fingering weight yarn, suitable for working in the round
Design Features
The rolled brim design allows the finished beanie to be easily packed and stored, making it a practical travel accessory. The cable pattern provides both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity to the hat. As a fingering weight construction, this version offers a more delicate and less bulky alternative to heavier beanie options while maintaining warmth and wearability.
