"You are my lucky star I saw you from afar..."
One of my very favorite movies is "Singin' in the Rain." I start the day singing "Good Morning, Good Mooooorning!" Sweet little rain showers are greeted with song. I occasionally suppose my toeses are roses, but then I suppose erroneously.
This past winter, I began playing with a skein of Cascade Casablanca, a worsted self-striping yarn. At TNNA in January 2013, I learned a formula for knitting a sweater in the round, and thought it would be a fun way to use all those stripes. As I spent an evening knitting around and around, I started wondering what else I could do to make this piece more interesting. With a simple series of decreases and increases, a star began to form and I fell in love.
The song began to make its way through my head shortly thereafter."

Lucky Star Shrug by Housewyfe Designs
What is Being Made
The Lucky Star Shrug is a knitted waistcoat-style garment designed by Housewyfe Designs. This piece features a distinctive star motif created through strategic decreases and increases worked into the fabric. Available in six sizes ranging from 32 inches to 52 inches bust measurement, the shrug combines wearable elegance with eye-catching geometric design elements. The garment is worked in the round, creating a seamless construction that showcases the natural striping of the yarn throughout the piece.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Lucky Star Shrug employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its signature appearance. The primary construction method involves circular knitting, where stitches are worked continuously in rounds rather than in flat rows. This technique creates a seamless garment with no side seams, allowing the self-striping yarn to flow uninterrupted around the body.
The star design is accomplished through a series of strategic decreases and increases worked into the fabric. These shaping techniques create the dimensional star pattern that forms the visual focal point of the shrug. The decreases and increases are worked in a calculated sequence that allows the star to emerge organically from the knitted fabric as the piece grows.
The shrug's construction is based on a formula for knitting a sweater in the round, a method that allows for efficient and proportional garment shaping. This approach ensures proper fit across multiple sizes while maintaining the integrity of the star motif throughout each size variation.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern materials provided, the Lucky Star Shrug utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with decreases (such as knit two together or slip, slip, knit) and increases (such as yarn overs or lifted increases) to create the star pattern. These shaping stitches are the primary decorative and structural elements that differentiate this shrug from basic stockinette garments.
Materials and Yarn
The Lucky Star Shrug is designed to showcase Cascade Casablanca, a luxurious worsted-weight self-striping yarn. This yarn features a sophisticated fiber blend of 59% Wool, 24% Silk, and 17% Mohair, combining warmth, drape, and subtle sheen. Each 100-gram skein yields 220 yards of yardage.
The pattern calls for Color 07 Reds in Cascade Casablanca, a self-striping colorway that creates automatic pattern variation without requiring color changes. The yardage requirements scale with size: the smallest size (32 inches) requires 4 skeins, while the largest size (52 inches) requires 9 skeins, providing approximately 880 to 1,980 yards of yarn depending on the chosen size.
Needles
Specific needle size and type information is referenced in the pattern materials but not fully detailed in the provided content. Knitters should refer to the complete pattern instructions for needle gauge recommendations and sizing, which will be appropriate for working worsted-weight yarn in the round.
Design Inspiration
The Lucky Star Shrug draws creative inspiration from the classic film "Singin' in the Rain," with its star motif serving as a visual tribute to the song's lyrics. The design emerged organically during an evening of circular knitting, when the designer experimented with decreases and increases to add visual interest to the self-striping yarn. The result is a garment that combines functional wearability with whimsical, intentional design.
