Lovegood Cardigan by Teresa Gregorio

Project Overview

The Lovegood Cardigan is an advanced-level knitted cardigan designed by independent designer Teresa Gregorio. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted cardigan with elegant lace detailing on the sleeves and button-front closure. The garment is designed to fit a 35-inch bust and features sophisticated shaping through raglan construction.

What Is Being Made

This is a full cardigan sweater featuring a button-front closure with nine 15mm buttons. The design includes shaped sleeves constructed using raglan increases, a fitted back panel, and front panels that meet at the center front for buttoning. The cardigan incorporates decorative lace panels positioned on the arms, adding visual interest and texture to the piece.

Construction Techniques

The Lovegood Cardigan employs several advanced knitting techniques that make it suitable for experienced knitters:

  • Raglan Construction: The cardigan uses a raglan shaping method, with increases worked on each side of placed markers on right-side rows. This creates the characteristic diagonal seam lines from the armhole to the neckline, allowing for smooth cap shaping on the sleeves.
  • Circular Needle Knitting: The pattern is worked on circular needles in the round, with stitch markers used to divide sections for the left front, left sleeve, back, right sleeve, and right front.
  • Lace Integration: Lace panels are incorporated into the sleeve sections, positioned in the middle of each arm. This technique requires working yarn overs and decreases simultaneously with the raglan shaping.
  • Gauge Manipulation: The pattern uses three different needle sizes to achieve specific gauge measurements, demonstrating advanced understanding of how needle size affects stitch density.

Stitches Used

The Lovegood Cardigan incorporates a variety of knitting stitches appropriate for an advanced project:

  • Garter Rib: Used for the initial 6-row ribbed edging. This stitch combines knit and purl stitches on the right side (K1, P1 pattern) with purl stitches across the wrong side, creating a textured elastic edge.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch for the body of the cardigan, worked in knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows, creating a smooth, classic fabric.
  • Lace Stitches: The lace panel uses yarn overs (YO), knit stitches (K), and decreases including slip-knit-pass-over (SKPO) and knit-two-together (K2tog) decreases. The lace pattern follows a 6-stitch plus 1 multiple repeat, with the pattern changing between odd-numbered rows while even rows are purled throughout.
  • Raglan Increases: Single stitch increases are worked on each side of the four raglan markers on every right-side row to shape the sleeves and create the cardigan's silhouette.

Materials and Yarn

The Lovegood Cardigan is worked in DK-weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for both the stockinette body and the lace panels. The pattern calls for 3.5 hanks of Manos Silk Blend, a luxury yarn blend that offers drape and sheen appropriate for a refined cardigan design.

Needles and Tools

Three sizes of circular needles are required to work this pattern: 3mm, 3.5mm, and 4mm. The pattern begins on 3mm needles for the ribbed cast-on edge, then progresses to larger needle sizes as the body is worked. The gauge varies slightly across the needle sizes: 5.5 stitches per inch on the 3mm and 3.5mm needles, and 5 stitches per inch on the 4mm needles. Stitch markers are essential for dividing the initial 165 cast-on stitches into the five sections that form the cardigan's structure.

Skill Level Considerations

This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, making it suitable for experienced knitters. The simultaneous execution of raglan shaping and lace panel construction requires strong multitasking skills and familiarity with reading lace charts or written lace instructions. The use of multiple needle sizes and the need to maintain gauge across different needle sizes adds another layer of complexity that benefits from prior experience with gauge adjustment and needle sizing.
