Product Description
A tweak of the usual owl cable allows for a nice, pointy “ear” for these owls, and the middle row of owls sport some jaunty belly stripes. Beads placed while knitting make for easy owl eyes that don’t require sewing on sequins later. This hat is a lighter knit with sport-weight yarn, allowing for a lot of owls to decorate it. The more owls the merrier! This pattern contains full written instructions as well as charts, and can be knit as a beanie or slouchy hat.

Long-Eared Owlet Cable Hat by Sara Burch
What Is Being Made
The Long-Eared Owlet Cable Hat is a knitted beanie designed by Sara Burch, available in four sizes to fit head circumferences of 18, 19, 21, and 23 inches (46, 48, 53, and 58 cm respectively). This hat features a playful design incorporating beaded embellishments and cable stitch work, creating a whimsical owlet-inspired aesthetic. The pattern is suitable for knitters of all skill levels, classified as a beginner-friendly project that produces a cozy, fitted beanie-style hat.
Techniques Used
The construction of this hat employs several key knitting techniques. Cable knitting forms the primary decorative element, creating textured twisted stitch patterns characteristic of cable work. Circular knitting on round needles produces a seamless crown and body. Bead application is incorporated into the design using a specialized beading method: beads are added using a crochet hook and floss threaders, allowing beads to be integrated into the knitted fabric. The pattern references detailed beading techniques from external knitting resources to guide crafters through this embellishment process. The hat is worked in the round from the cast-on edge upward, with shaping to create a fitted silhouette.
Stitches Used
While the complete stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern's chart legend, the design prominently features cable stitches as the primary stitch pattern element. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations detailed on page 3 of the PDF. Knitters will work with basic knit and purl stitches as foundational techniques, with cable crosses creating the dimensional texture throughout the hat.
Materials Required
The Owlet Cable Hat requires approximately 180 to 240 yards of yarn, depending on the chosen size. The recommended yarn weight is Sport Weight or heavy Fingering Weight. The sample was knit using Classic Elite Yarns Liberty Wool Light (100% Wool, color 6649), though any appropriate yarn in these weight categories will work. Essential needles include a US 2/2.75 mm 16-inch circular needle for the initial ribbed cuff and a US 3/3.25 mm 16-inch circular needle for the main body, along with US 3/3.25 mm double-pointed needles for crown decreases. The pattern requires 40 to 78 size 6/0 seed beads depending on size, a steel crochet hook for bead application, and floss threaders to facilitate the beading process. Knitters should select needle sizes to achieve proper gauge as specified in the pattern.
