Lola Cowl by Alexandra Davidoff

What is Being Made

Lola is a knitted cowl designed by Alexandra Davidoff, featuring a sophisticated cable pattern with a distinctive bobble edge detail. This one-size cowl measures approximately 19 inches (48 centimeters) in circumference and 8 inches (20.5 centimeters) in width, or 4 inches when folded in half. The design combines classic cable work with textured bobble edging for a refined, dimensional finish suitable for intermediate knitters.

Techniques Used

This cowl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. Cable knitting forms the primary pattern throughout the piece, creating the characteristic twisted rope-like texture that defines the Lola Cable Pattern. Bobble edging is worked as a decorative border, adding textural interest and visual definition to the cowl's edges. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, continuous fabric. Stitch markers are essential throughout construction, with one marker placed at the beginning of each round and 27 additional markers used specifically for the Lola Bobble Edge section to maintain pattern accuracy.

Stitches Used

The Lola cowl features the Lola Cable Pattern as its primary stitch work, which repeats across 14 pattern repeats when casting on 112 stitches. The pattern incorporates cable stitches worked with a cable needle to create the twisted, interlocking texture characteristic of cable knit designs. The Lola Bobble Edge provides textured edging and is worked in four-round sequences, repeated twice during construction. These stitches work together to create depth and visual interest while maintaining the intermediate skill level of the project.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This project requires 1 hank of Moonshine by Juniper Moon Farm in color #28 Lazy Sunday. The yarn is a premium blend consisting of 40% Alpaca, 40% Wool, and 20% Silk, offering a luxurious feel with excellent drape and warmth. The yarn provides 197 yards (180 meters) per 100 grams (3.5 ounces) and falls into the worsted weight category, making it suitable for creating fabric with good stitch definition.

Needles required include US8 (5.0 millimeter) circular needles measuring 22 inches (56 centimeters) in length, or the size necessary to obtain proper gauge. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 28 rounds equal 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked over the Lola Cable Pattern using US8 needles. Additional notions include a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches, stitch markers (one for the beginning of round and 27 for the Lola Bobble Edge), a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and a tiny bow for finishing detail.
