What Is Being Made

This is a crocheted bookmark featuring a Raggedy Ann character design, created by designer LoisLeigh Anderson for Anderson's Creations. The finished bookmark measures 3 inches wide by 6½ inches long, making it a practical and charming accessory for book lovers. The design captures the classic appearance of Raggedy Ann with distinctive features including her characteristic red hair, painted facial features, and colorful pinafore dress.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental crochet techniques to build a three-dimensional bookmark with detailed character elements. The pattern incorporates shaping and assembly methods to create depth and definition in the Raggedy Ann figure. Embellishments are added through embroidery work for facial features, and the design includes strategic use of polyester fiberfill stuffing to give the bookmark structure and dimension. The pattern provides complete written instructions along with abbreviation descriptions to guide crafters through each step of construction.

Stitches Used

The crochet stitches employed in this pattern include:

  • Single Crochet (sc) – used for creating tight, dense fabric sections
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – provides medium-weight fabric for body components
  • Double Crochet (dc) – creates taller stitches for varied texture and drape
  • Treble Crochet (tr) – adds height and openness where needed
  • Slip Stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges

Materials and Tools

This project uses bedspread weight cotton thread (size 10), a fine thread that creates detailed, delicate work suitable for a small bookmark. The color palette includes peach or skin tone thread (10 yards), cream or pinafore color thread (34 yards), blue or garment color thread (11 yards), red thread for sock details (2 yards), black thread for facial features and shoes (3 yards), and red embroidery floss for hair (1 skein). Additional materials include a small amount of polyester fiberfill for stuffing, embroidery floss for facial details, and washable fabric glue for assembly.

The recommended tool is a Boye Steel Crochet hook size 1 (2.25mm), which is appropriately sized for working with fine thread. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends and embroidery work. The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 half double crochet stitches and 5 rows of half double crochet per inch (2.5cm), ensuring proper sizing of the finished bookmark.

Skill Level and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate project, this bookmark pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and construction techniques. The small finished size and use of fine thread require attention to detail and precision, making it an engaging project for experienced beginners or intermediate crafters looking to develop their skills with detailed work.
