Llama Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet

Project Overview

This downloadable crochet pattern from independent designer Kerri's Crochet provides instructions for creating an amigurumi-style llama. The pattern is designed at an intermediate difficulty level and includes guidance for making llamas facing in opposite directions, offering crafters flexibility in their finished projects. A video tutorial is available to supplement the written instructions.

What You Will Make

The pattern produces a three-dimensional crocheted llama figure, complete with a decorative saddle. The llama features embroidered facial details including eyes, nose, and mouth. The saddle is constructed separately using contrasting colors and then stitched onto the completed llama body, creating a finished decorative piece suitable for display or gifting.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level project employs fundamental crochet techniques that build shaping and structure into the piece. The pattern utilizes the following stitches and techniques:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create foundation chains and turning chains throughout the pattern
  • Double crochet (dc) – The primary stitch used for building the body and head sections
  • Half treble crochet (htr) – Employed for specific shaping elements
  • Treble crochet (tr) – Used in selected areas to create varied texture and structure
  • Double treble crochet (dtr) – Incorporated for specific design details
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and create clean transitions
  • Increasing stitches – The pattern demonstrates increases by working 2 stitches into 1 stitch, as shown in the head section where increases at the beginning and end of rows create shaping

The pattern is written using UK crochet terminology and abbreviations, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with British crochet conventions.

Materials and Tools Required

The pattern calls for 4 ply crochet cotton in 4 colors: one color for the llama body and three coordinating colors for the saddle. While the designer used cotton, the pattern notes that wool yarn can be substituted based on crafter preference.

Essential tools and notions include:

  • A 1.25mm crochet hook (the size used by the designer; appropriate for 4 ply yarn)
  • Scissors for cutting yarn
  • A sewing needle and thread to attach the saddle to the llama body
  • A darning needle for weaving in loose yarn ends
  • Black sewing or embroidery cotton for embroidering facial features

Pattern Structure

The pattern is organized by body sections, beginning with the head. Instructions are presented row-by-row with stitch counts provided in parentheses for easy tracking. The head section demonstrates the foundational techniques used throughout, starting with a 5-chain foundation and building outward through strategic increases. This methodical approach makes it suitable for intermediate crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle shaping and construction.

Design Features

The llama pattern includes directional variation, allowing crafters to create llamas facing left or right. The separate saddle component adds visual interest and allows for creative color combinations. Embroidered facial features provide personalization and character to the finished piece, transforming the crocheted form into a recognizable llama figure.
