Livingston Basket Crochet Pattern by Janine Myska
What Is Being Made
The Livingston Basket is a practical crochet container project designed by Janine Myska and published by Knits 'N Knots in 2019. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a finished basket suitable for storage and home organization. The pattern offers two size options—a small basket and a large basket—allowing crafters to choose the dimensions that best suit their needs.
Crochet Techniques and Construction Method
The Livingston Basket employs a two-part construction technique that begins with crocheting a base, followed by building the basket sides onto that base working in the round. A distinctive feature of this pattern is the use of double-stranded yarn, meaning two strands of yarn are held together and worked as a single strand throughout the entire project. This technique creates a thicker, more substantial fabric that contributes to the basket's structure and durability. The gauge of the finished piece may vary slightly depending on the specific yarn colorway selected, as different dyes and fiber blends can affect yarn thickness and density.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While the pattern description does not specify individual stitch names in detail, the construction method indicates that the pattern uses fundamental crochet stitches worked in rounds to build the basket structure from the base upward. The round-by-round construction allows for shaping and sizing control as the basket walls are established.
Materials and Tools Required
The Livingston Basket pattern calls for the following materials and equipment:
- Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick in a super chunky weight (#6 yarn), requiring 2 to 4 skeins depending on which size basket is being made. The yardage needed ranges from 159 to 424 yards (146 to 388 meters). Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick is a blend of 20% wool and 80% acrylic, offering durability and easy care.
- Crochet Hook: Size K/10½ (6.5mm) crochet hook for working with the super chunky yarn weight
- Additional Tools: Scissors, a stitch marker or scrap yarn for tracking rounds, and a needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion
Pattern Features and Considerations
The pattern is an original design protected by copyright to Knits 'N Knots. Crafters who complete this project may sell their finished baskets provided they include pattern credit to Knits 'N Knots or link back to knitsnknots.ca. The super chunky yarn weight and double-stranded construction method create a quick, satisfying project with visible results. Crafters should be aware that yarn colorway selection can influence the final gauge and appearance of the basket, with some colors producing slightly thicker or thinner fabric than others.
