Product Description
The Little People Yoked Jumper is the pattern I would have liked to buy when my own children were small and I didn't have time to design one. It's seam free and has a yoke with a lowered front neck. The people design is one that crops up in folk knitting the world over and it's referred to as dancers, farmers, paper dolls etc. I love the way the people hold hands, and you can mix boys and girls together if you wish. The red and green versions are knitted in Schachenmayr Merino Extra fine which gives a lovely stitch definition but any good DK in pure wool would work well. Instructions are given for ages 2 to 8 years. The pattern would suit anyone wishing to create a timeless classic that will be enjoyed by children and much admired.
Little People Yoked Jumper by Jane Reay
What is Being Made
The Little People Yoked Jumper is a children's pullover sweater designed for ages 2 to 8 years, featuring a charming all-over motif of small figures holding hands around the yoke. This timeless design draws inspiration from traditional folk knitting patterns found worldwide, where similar people motifs are known by various names including dancers, farmers, fishermen, and paper dolls. The finished chest size for the smallest size is 61 centimeters (24 inches). The design allows for creative personalization, enabling knitters to alternate between boy and girl figures throughout the pattern.
Construction Techniques
The Little People Yoked Jumper is constructed using modern seamless knitting methods that minimize finishing work. The garment is knitted in the round from the bottom up, with the sleeves and body worked separately before being joined at the yoke. This approach creates a continuous fabric with minimal seaming—only a short join is required under each arm. The front neckline is shaped using short rows, a technique that lowers the front opening for a comfortable fit and flattering neckline without requiring traditional bind-offs and pick-ups.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern employs stranded colorwork knitting to create the little people motif, a technique where two colors are carried across the row to form the design. This method is characteristic of traditional folk knitting and creates the bold, graphic appearance of the figures holding hands around the yoke. The base fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth canvas for the colorwork pattern to stand out clearly.
Materials
The Little People Yoked Jumper is knitted in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that creates a cosy, durable fabric suitable for children's wear. The pattern notes that the green and red versions shown are worked in Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine, a merino wool yarn that delivers beautiful stitch definition and brings out the clarity of the colorwork design. Appropriate knitting needles for DK weight yarn are required to work this pattern, which is suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level.
Design Heritage
This pattern represents a modern interpretation of a traditional design that has been passed down through generations. The designer created this version inspired by a similar jumper made by her sister over 40 years ago, demonstrating the enduring appeal of folk knitting motifs. Like authentic traditional and folk knitting, the Little People Yoked Jumper possesses a timeless quality that transcends contemporary fashion trends, making it a cherished heirloom piece for young children.
