Product Description

Linnaea Socks are a pair of cute toe-up socks knit in fingering-weight yarn. A dainty slip-stitch cable pattern creates a fun lattice effect that’s both quick to knit and easy to memorize. After a few cable twists you won’t even need a cable needle! The pattern is ideal for variegated yarns but works equally well with solid or semi-solid colors.

The socks are knit from the toe up with a stockinette sole, eye-of-partridge heel flap, and a twisted-rib cuff that emerges seamlessly from the cable pattern. The socks come in three sizes (60, 64, and 68 stitches) but both foot and leg length are adjustable within the stitch pattern. Right and left socks are identical and can be worked two at a time.

The pattern is written with both metric and US terminology. Both written and charted instructions are given for the slip-stitch cable pattern.

Gauge: 31 sts × 46 rnds = 10 cm / 4” in stockinette, blocked

Linnaea Socks by Susanna Winter

What Is Being Made

Linnaea Socks are a pair of toe-up socks designed by Susanna Winter. These socks feature a dainty slip-stitch cable pattern that creates a fun lace effect, making them both visually appealing and practical for everyday wear. The design is ideal for variegated yarns but works equally well with solid or semi-solid color schemes, offering versatility for knitters with different yarn preferences.

Knitting Techniques

The Linnaea Socks employ several classic sock construction techniques to create a well-fitted, durable garment. The socks are knit from the toe up, a method that allows for easy adjustments and precise fit. The sole features stockinette stitch for durability and smooth wear inside shoes. The heel is constructed using an eye-of-partridge heel flap, a traditional technique that creates a dense, reinforced heel section resistant to wear. The cuff is finished with a twisted-rib design that emerges seamlessly from the cable pattern, creating a cohesive, polished appearance.

The slip-stitch cable pattern is designed to be both quick to knit and easy to memorize. After working through a few cable twists, knitters can work the pattern without needing a cable needle, streamlining the knitting process and reducing the tools required.

Stitches Used

  • Slip-stitch cable pattern: Creates the signature lace effect while remaining accessible for intermediate knitters
  • Stockinette stitch: Used for the sole to provide durability and a smooth interior surface
  • Eye-of-partridge heel flap: A textured heel technique that reinforces the heel area
  • Twisted-rib cuff: Provides elasticity and a refined finish that transitions seamlessly from the cable pattern

Materials and Yarn Weight

Linnaea Socks are knit using fingering-weight yarn (4-ply), the traditional choice for sock knitting. This yarn weight creates a fabric with excellent stitch definition, allowing the slip-stitch cable pattern to stand out beautifully. The pattern accommodates three sizes with stitch counts of 60, 64, and 68 stitches, providing options for different foot circumferences. Both foot and leg length are adjustable within the stitch pattern, allowing knitters to customize the finished socks to their specific measurements. Right and left socks are identical and can be worked two at a time using the two-at-a-time method, a popular technique for efficient sock production.

Pattern Format and Instructions

The Linnaea Socks pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF and includes comprehensive instructions written with both metric and US terminology, making it accessible to knitters worldwide. Both written and charted instructions are provided for all stitch patterns, giving knitters flexibility in how they prefer to follow the pattern. This intermediate-level design is suitable for knitters with basic sock-knitting experience who are ready to explore more decorative stitch patterns.
