What Is Being Made
The Lightweight Chunky Baby Blanket is a beginner-friendly knitted throw designed specifically for infants and young children. This cosy blanket measures approximately 24 x 31 inches (61 x 79 cm) when finished, making it an ideal size for a crib, pram, or as a decorative nursery piece. The pattern creates a soft, tactile blanket using lightweight chunky yarn that provides warmth without excessive weight—perfect for delicate baby skin.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs straightforward knitting techniques suitable for beginners, combining basic knit and purl stitches to create visual interest and texture. The blanket is constructed using a simple repeating pattern that alternates between stockinette stitch sections and seed stitch panels. The edges are finished with garter stitch borders (4 stitches of knit on each side), which provide a neat, durable frame and help prevent curling.
The construction method involves casting on 68 stitches and working through multiple pattern repeats. The blanket begins and ends with garter stitch rows, and the main body features alternating rows of stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) and seed stitch (alternating knit and purl stitches across the row). This combination creates a balanced, reversible fabric with subtle textural variation.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K): The fundamental stitch used throughout the pattern, creating the base fabric and garter stitch borders
- Purl stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create stockinette sections and seed stitch texture
- Garter stitch: Created by knitting every row, forming the 4-stitch borders on each side and the opening and closing rows
- Stockinette stitch: Alternating knit and purl rows create smooth, classic texture in the main blanket sections
- Seed stitch: Alternating knit and purl stitches within each row produce a bumpy, textured surface that adds visual and tactile interest
Materials Required
The Lightweight Chunky Baby Blanket requires approximately 200 grams (350 metres) of chunky chenille-type baby yarn. Chunky chenille yarn is an excellent choice for baby blankets because it is soft, durable, and provides excellent drape while remaining lightweight. A pair of 6 mm (US size 10) knitting needles at least 33 cm long is needed, or alternatively, circular needles of the same size can be used. The recommended tension is 11 stitches over 20 rows, measuring 10 x 10 cm, which helps ensure the finished blanket reaches the intended dimensions and has the proper fabric weight and drape for a baby blanket.
