Light Linen Cardigan by Takako Takiguchi

What Is Being Made

The Light Linen Cardigan is an open-front airy cardigan designed for versatile seasonal wear. This garment combines linen and wool fibers to create a breathable yet warm piece suitable for layering throughout the year. The cardigan features a rounded front hemline achieved through strategic shaping techniques, making it an elegant and wearable addition to any wardrobe.

Construction Method and Techniques

This cardigan is worked using a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust the finished length. The body is worked flat on circular needles, providing stability and ease of handling for a larger project. After the body is complete, the sleeves are divided and worked in the round, a technique that eliminates seaming and creates seamless, professional-looking sleeve caps. Short rows are strategically incorporated at the bottom of the cardigan to shape the front hemline into a rounded silhouette, adding sophisticated tailoring to the design.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout this cardigan is a k2tbl, p2 ribbing, which creates vertical texture and elasticity. Knitting through the back loop (ktbl) and purling through the back loop (ptbl) are used to create twisted stitches that add definition to the ribbed pattern. The pattern also incorporates m1l (make one left) and m1r (make one right) increases, which are directional increases used to shape the cardigan seamlessly during construction. These increases are worked by picking up the bar between stitches and knitting into the back loop, creating invisible shaping.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for DK weight yarn, with yardage requirements ranging from 810 to 1070 meters depending on the size chosen. The recommended yarn is Schoppel-Wolle Leinen Los in the Natur colorway, which features a linen and wool blend at 300 meters per 100 grams. This fiber composition provides breathability from the linen content while maintaining warmth and elasticity from the wool, making the finished cardigan comfortable across seasons.

Tools and Notions

  • Needles: 2.75mm circular needle for working the body and sleeves
  • Gauge: 22 stitches by 24 rows in 10 centimeters measured over k2tbl, p2 ribbing
  • Additional notions: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and dividing points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and any finishing

Size Range and Finished Measurements

The Light Linen Cardigan is available in six sizes: S, M/L, L, XL, 2XL, and 3XL. Finished measurements for the front range from 25 to 35 centimeters across, while back measurements span from 44 to 58 centimeters, accommodating a wide range of body types and fit preferences.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent project for knitters new to cardigan construction or top-down shaping techniques. The straightforward ribbed stitch pattern and clear construction method provide an accessible introduction to garment knitting without overwhelming complexity.
