Liberty - Babies Seamless Textured Beanie
What is Being Made
The Liberty is a seamless baby beanie designed by Jennifer Lee, suitable for newborns through 12-month-old infants of any gender. This knitted hat features a classic construction with a ribbed brim and textured body, available in four graduated sizes to fit head circumferences from 35cm (13¾ inches) for newborns up to 48cm (19 inches) for 12-month-olds.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beanie is worked entirely in the round using the seamless knitting method, eliminating the need for seaming. The construction begins with a cast-on edge worked in a 1x1 ribbed stitch for the brim, which provides stretch and a finished edge that sits comfortably on a baby's head. The main body transitions into an easy textured stitch pattern that adds visual interest and subtle dimension to the finished hat.
The seamless, in-the-round construction is ideal for baby garments, as it creates a smooth, comfortable fit without seams that might irritate delicate skin. This technique also allows for continuous knitting without turning the work, making the pattern straightforward for knitters at the beginner level.
Stitches Used
- 1x1 Ribbing: The brim uses alternating knit and purl stitches in a single-stitch repeat, creating vertical columns that provide elasticity
- Textured Stitch: The main body features an easy textured pattern that adds subtle surface variation without requiring complex stitch manipulation
- Stocking Stitch: Referenced for tension measurement, indicating smooth stockinette sections may be incorporated into the overall design
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Liberty beanie requires 4-ply yarn, specifically one 100-gram ball of Patons 100% Cotton 4ply (330 meters per ball). The 4-ply weight provides a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for babies, and the cotton fiber content ensures softness and comfort against sensitive skin while offering temperature regulation.
Knitting is worked on 3.25mm double-pointed needles (UK size 10, US size 3/4), which are the appropriate needle size to achieve the required tension of 28 stitches and 36 rows over 10 centimeters in stocking stitch. A wool needle is required for weaving in yarn ends after completion. The double-pointed needle format allows for seamless in-the-round knitting of the small circumference hat.
Pattern Difficulty and Suitability
Rated as Easy, the Liberty beanie is an excellent beginner knitting project. The straightforward combination of basic stitches—ribbing and textured knit—makes it accessible to knitters new to in-the-round construction. The downloadable PDF format provides complete pattern instructions, abbreviations, and sizing information for all four baby sizes in one convenient document.
