Liane Cowl by ViTalina Craft
What Is Being Made
The Liane Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted neck accessory designed to fit neck circumferences up to 36-38 cm (15 inches). This cowl is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern created by independent designer ViTalina Craft, suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to work beyond basic techniques.
Knitting Techniques Used
This cowl pattern incorporates several intermediate knitting techniques that add visual interest and shaping to the finished piece. The design employs in-the-round knitting using circular needles, which creates a seamless, tubular construction ideal for neck wear. The pattern utilizes decreasing techniques to shape the cowl, including the twisted left decrease (tssk) and purl three together (p3tog) methods, which help create a refined fit around the neck. The pattern also incorporates make-one increases (M1k) to add stitches where needed for shaping. Working through the back loop (k1tbl) is another technique featured in the pattern, which creates a twisted stitch effect that can add textural variation.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Liane Cowl features stockinette stitch as the primary stitch pattern, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-shaped texture on the right side. The pattern also includes ribbing, which provides elasticity and helps the cowl maintain its shape around the neck. The ribbing sections work at a different gauge than the stockinette body, creating a structured edge that sits comfortably against the skin. Stitch markers are used throughout the pattern to help track pattern repeats and construction points.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Liane Cowl requires 100 grams of worsted weight yarn (also known as 10-ply), with a total yardage of 219 yards (200 meters). The pattern was specifically designed and tested using Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted yarn, a durable, machine-washable wool that is ideal for everyday neck wear. Two circular needles are required: a US 7 (4.5mm) circular needle measuring 50 cm in length for the main body, and a US 6 (4.0mm) circular needle measuring 40 cm in length for the ribbed sections. The gauge is 20 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using the US 7 needles, while the ribbing gauge is 26 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm), also worked on US 7 needles. Maintaining proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
