Let's Go for a Stroll Mittens by yellowcosmo

What is Being Made

Let's Go for a Stroll is a pair of knitted mittens designed by Connie Peng of yellowcosmo designs. These are classic, wearable mittens constructed in a single size that measures 9 ¼ inches (23.5 cm) around the hand with an 11-inch (28 cm) tall length. The mittens feature a textured stitch pattern and are worked from the cuff upward, making them an accessible project for intermediate knitters.

Knitting Techniques Used

The mittens are worked in the round using your preferred circular knitting method, which offers flexibility for knitters with different preferences. Options include traditional circular needles, double-pointed needles (dpns), or the long circular needle magic loop technique. The construction begins at the cuff and progresses upward toward the fingertips. A distinctive feature of this pattern is the waste yarn thumb technique, where thumb stitches are provisionally cast on during round 23 of the chart using waste yarn. After the main mitten body is completed, the thumb stitches are picked up and worked in the round separately, creating a seamless thumb opening.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout the mittens is Double Moss Stitch, a textured reversible pattern that creates visual interest and subtle dimension. Double Moss Stitch works over multiples of 4 stitches in a 4-round repeat: rounds 1 and 2 alternate knit 2, purl 2, while rounds 3 and 4 reverse this to purl 2, knit 2. This creates a checkerboard-like texture that is both decorative and functional, providing warmth and structure. The pattern is charted, allowing knitters to follow a visual representation of the stitch sequence throughout the mitten.

Materials and Gauge

The mittens are knitted using Heavy Worsted Weight yarn, specifically Knit One Crochet Too Camelino in the color Fog, requiring 170 yards (155 meters) total. Two needle sizes are required: US #7 / 4.5 mm needles for the main fabric and US #6 / 4.00 mm needles (one size smaller) for ribbed sections or cuff work. A cable needle is needed for any cable techniques that may be incorporated into the design. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches by 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm) when working Double Moss Stitch on the larger needle. Additional notions include 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, and waste yarn for the provisional thumb cast-on technique.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic stockinette stitch. The Double Moss Stitch texture requires attention to the knit and purl sequence, and the waste yarn thumb technique introduces a slightly more advanced construction method than simple thumb gussets. However, the straightforward construction from cuff up and clear charted instructions make this an achievable project for knitters ready to expand their skills.
