LENTE Baby Cardigan, Trousers, Hat & Bootees by Precious Newborn Knits
Overview
The LENTE pattern is a comprehensive newborn knitting collection designed by Precious Newborn Knits, offering four coordinated pieces perfect for creating a complete baby outfit. This intermediate-level knitting project includes a cardigan, short trousers, a hat, and bootees, all worked in DK weight yarn. The collection provides a cohesive design solution for knitters seeking to create multiple matching garments from a single pattern.
Cardigan
The cardigan is the centerpiece of this collection, featuring a classic construction suitable for newborns. The finished cardigan measures 16 inches across the chest with a total length of 9.5 inches and an underarm seam depth of 5 inches. The design employs strategic decreasing techniques, with instructions to decrease 1 stitch at each end of alternating rows to shape the garment appropriately.
The cardigan is constructed using fundamental knitting stitches and shaping methods. The pattern utilizes stocking stitch as the primary fabric, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, refined finish. Garter stitch, created by knitting every row, is also incorporated into the design for textural variation and structural definition.
Short Trousers
The trousers component completes the outfit with a coordinated lower garment. These short trousers are designed to match the cardigan's proportions and aesthetic, creating a unified newborn ensemble.
Hat
The hat is engineered as a circular knit piece measuring 13 inches in circumference, making it appropriately sized for newborn head measurements. This round construction allows for seamless knitting in the round or careful seaming if worked flat.
Bootees
The bootees are small, delicate pieces measuring 3.25 inches in length, designed to fit tiny newborn feet. These finishing pieces complete the coordinated collection.
Knitting Techniques & Stitches
The LENTE pattern employs a range of intermediate knitting techniques suitable for experienced beginners and intermediate knitters:
- Stocking Stitch: The primary fabric construction, alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, creating a smooth, classic appearance
- Garter Stitch: Knitting every row to create textured ridges, used for borders, edges, or decorative sections
- Decreasing Methods: The pattern includes multiple decrease techniques such as k2tog (knit 2 stitches together), k2togtbl (knit 2 together through back loop), p2tog (purl 2 stitches together), and slip-stitch decreases (sl1k, psso) for shaping
- Increasing Methods: Techniques including yarn round needle (yrn), yarn forward (yfwd), yarn over needle (yon), and m1 (make one by picking up the loop before the next stitch and knitting into the back) for adding stitches and creating shaping
- Slip Stitches: Slip one stitch purlwise (sl1p) and slip one stitch knitwise (sl1k) for seamless transitions and edge finishing
Yarn & Materials
The LENTE pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight suitable for creating delicate yet durable newborn garments. The pattern accommodates both main yarn (M) and contrast yarn (C), allowing knitters to create two-color designs or coordinate different shades throughout the collection.
The recommended needle size is 3.75mm, which produces the correct tension for this pattern. The specified tension is 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches, measured over stocking stitch. Achieving proper tension is essential for creating garments that fit the specified finished measurements.
Pattern Structure & Difficulty
Classified as an intermediate difficulty project, the LENTE pattern requires competency with fundamental knitting skills including cast-on and bind-off methods, basic stitch work, and shaping techniques. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and provides clear instructions for garment construction. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations such as K (knit), P (purl), tog (together), Dec (decrease), Inc (increase), cont (continue), and patt (pattern).
