What is Being Made
Lauren's Blanket is a knitted throw blanket available in five graduated sizes, ranging from a small 47 x 53cm finished piece to a large 134 x 200cm blanket. The design offers flexibility with two edging options: a simple plain edge version or an elegant lace edge that adds 10cm on all sides. This makes it suitable for various spaces and gifting occasions, from crib blankets to bed throws.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The blanket construction uses a combination of stitch patterns worked in repeating sequences, allowing knitters to develop rhythm and consistency. The pattern incorporates slip stitches at the edge (slip 1 wyib, or with yarn in back) to create neat selvage edges. For the lace edge variation, knitters will work lace edging simultaneously with the main blanket body, which requires attention to stitch placement and pattern alignment but remains accessible to those new to lace knitting.
Stitches Used
The blanket utilizes a structured approach with multiple stitch patterns labeled as Pattern A, Pattern B, and Pattern C. These patterns are worked in a specific sequence—Pattern A, Pattern B, Pattern A, Pattern C—and repeated across the designated number of rows for each size. The pattern employs knit stitches as the primary stitch, combined with the decorative patterns to create visual interest and texture. Stitch markers are used to help track pattern repeats and edging placement, particularly in the lace edge version.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn Weight: DK weight yarn in quantities varying by size—plain edge versions require 320m to 3500m depending on the finished blanket size, while lace edge versions require 700m to 4300m
- Needles: 3.75mm knitting needles
- Additional Tools: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for pattern tracking
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a tension of 20 stitches by 30 rows over 10cm, measured across the whole blanket. This consistent gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. Five size options are provided: the smallest cast-on begins with 86 stitches (plain edge) or 94 stitches (main blanket with lace edge), scaling up to 254 and 268 stitches respectively for the largest version. The lace edging option adds 10cm on all sides to the finished measurements.
Pattern Structure
Lauren's Blanket follows a modular construction method. The pattern is divided into distinct sections: a bottom edging that can be worked with either a standard cast-on or an open cast-on for easier edging application, and the main blanket body. For the plain edge version, knitters work the main instructions in a specific pattern repeat cycle. For the lace edge version, the edging is integrated into the blanket construction from the beginning, with separate instructions provided for the first row of lace edging and subsequent rows. This simultaneous construction method creates a seamless, integrated border rather than an applied edging.
Skill Level
Designated as a beginner project, Lauren's Blanket is designed to be accessible to knitters new to blanket construction. The repeating pattern structure helps build muscle memory, and the straightforward stitch combinations allow crafters to focus on maintaining consistent tension and gauge—key skills for producing an even, professional-looking finished blanket.
