Product Description
Latha is an asymmetric triangular shawl designed with a garter body and lace border that features a meandering vine-like pattern.
I promise loads of mindless knitting / knit-flixing with this one. But may I request that you stay with me until you establish the border first? By doing that you get a fair idea of the lace, then you easily enter into the rhythm of working some mindless garter stopping periodically to work the lace.
‘Latha’ is a Sanskrit word that means creeper or vine. Vines are intriguing plants. There is a beautiful rhythm to their growth making them an easy theme for art and craft projects. But to me, they also demonstrate adaptiveness, resourcefulness and resilience. They seem to be saying “Grow where you are planted.” I hope you enjoy the growth and rhythm, Latha brings to your needles.
Latha Shawl by Kavitha Raman
What is Being Made
Latha is an asymmetric triangular shawl designed by independent designer Kavitha Raman. The name derives from Sanskrit, meaning "creeper" or "vine," reflecting the designer's inspiration from the natural rhythm and growth patterns of climbing plants. The shawl celebrates themes of adaptiveness, resourcefulness, and resilience through its structural design. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished shawl with dimensions of 70 inches (178 centimeters) along the longest edge, 54 inches (137 centimeters) along the lace border, and a depth of 27.5 inches (70 centimeters).
Techniques and Construction
The Latha Shawl employs a two-part construction technique combining a garter stitch body with a decorative lace border. The garter body forms the foundational structure of this asymmetric triangular design, providing a textured, reversible base. The lace panel creates an intricate border that frames the shawl, adding visual interest and demonstrating intermediate-level knitting skill. This combination of stockinette and lace work requires understanding of both fundamental and more advanced knitting techniques.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch: Forms the primary body of the shawl, created by knitting every row to produce horizontal ridges and a reversible fabric
- Lace Stitches: Featured in the border panel, incorporating yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterns
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for 4-ply fingering weight yarn. The sample shown was knitted using 2 skeins of Marianated Yarns Scrumptious HT, a premium blend containing 80% Superwash Merino, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon. This yarn provides 400 yards (365 meters) per 100 grams (3.5 ounces) and features a meandering vine-like pattern that complements the shawl's thematic inspiration.
Gauge and Specifications
The pattern specifies a gauge of 25 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in garter stitch, measured after blocking. Knitters should use appropriate needles for their chosen 4-ply yarn to achieve this gauge, ensuring proper fit and finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore lace work and shaping techniques. The combination of garter stitch simplicity with lace panel complexity makes it an accessible yet engaging project for developing knitters.
Pattern Support and Community
This downloadable PDF pattern is supported through CraftDoodling Designs, where designers offer community engagement including pattern support, knit-along challenges, pattern testing opportunities, and general crafting discussions.
