Product Description

L’Anse Aux Meadows is located in Newfoundland, and there are remains from a Norse settlement – the only one in North America. It is thought to be the site referred to as Vinland in the Icelandic Sagas. Vinland was established by Leif Ericsson around 1003, and the Vikings were settled there for a few years until they returned to Iceland.

Vinland was named after the vinbaer (grapes) that grew there, and the shawl shows the vines spreading out over the back, with the ripening grapes near the outer edges.

The shawl is knit from the neck down. The pattern is charted, and the lace pattern is only on every other row.

The pattern is available in English, French and German.

L'Anse Aux Meadows is the first shawl in the World Heritage Series. The other two are Tanumshede and Jelling Rune Stones

L'Anse Aux Meadows Lace Shawl by Anna Dalvi

What is Being Made

The L'Anse Aux Meadows Lace Shawl is an advanced knitting project inspired by the historic Norse settlement in Newfoundland, Canada. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a large triangular lace shawl with dimensions of 156 cm (62 inches) in width and 79 cm (31 inches) in height when blocked. The shawl is designed as a sophisticated garment suitable for experienced knitters seeking a complex lace project with historical significance.

Techniques Used

This advanced knitting pattern employs several sophisticated techniques characteristic of lace shawl construction. The shawl begins with a provisional cast-on method, allowing for seamless integration of stitches picked up from the cast-on edge. Knitters will use pick-up and knit techniques to expand the shawl from a small initial section into its full triangular shape. The pattern incorporates charted lace instructions that are read from right to left, with only right-side rows charted to streamline the pattern. The construction method involves working from the top down, gradually increasing the stitch count through yarn overs and decreases to create the lace motifs.

Stitches Used

The L'Anse Aux Meadows pattern utilizes fundamental lace stitches combined in charted sequences. Key stitches include knit (k), purl (p), yarn over (yo) for creating lace holes, knit two together (k2tog) for right-leaning decreases, and slip, slip, knit (ssk) for left-leaning decreases. These stitches are arranged in charted patterns to create the delicate lace design. The shawl features edge stitches maintained throughout (k2 on each side) to provide structure and finished edges.

Materials

This pattern requires 1 skein of Nightfall from FibroFibers, a 100% superwash merino wool yarn in 4-ply weight, providing 490 yards (448 meters) per 113 grams. The superwash treatment makes the finished shawl easy to care for. Knitters will need 4.5 mm (US 7) needles appropriate for the yarn weight and desired gauge, along with a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing. The yarn choice in Ivy or similar colorways complements the historical theme while the yardage is sufficient for the full blocked dimensions of the completed shawl.
