Lange Cowl and Hat in Berroco Millstone Tweed – Pattern Summary
The Lange pattern, designed by Lorenette Haynes and published by Berroco, is a coordinating set featuring a textured knitted cowl and hat worked in the cozy, rustic Berroco Millstone Tweed yarn. Rated as an intermediate skill level, this downloadable PDF pattern is an excellent project for knitters who are comfortable working in the round and reading stitch pattern charts. The set is designed to be worn together as a cohesive cold-weather accessory pairing, unified by a shared repeating stitch pattern and the same yarn colorway.
About the Designs
The Lange Hat
The Lange Hat is a structured, textured beanie with finished measurements of 18 inches (45.5 cm) in circumference and 9½ inches (24 cm) in height, measured unstretched. The hat is worked entirely in the round from the bottom up, beginning with a ribbed brim on a smaller needle before transitioning to the main pattern stitch on a larger needle. The repeating 17-stitch pattern is worked four times around the hat, creating an all-over textured fabric that showcases the character of the tweed yarn beautifully.
As the crown decreases progress and the stitch count reduces, knitters transition from a 16-inch circular needle to double-pointed needles (or a preferred method for small circumferences), ensuring smooth and comfortable knitting all the way to the top of the hat.
The Lange Cowl
The Lange Cowl is a generously sized, tube-style cowl with finished measurements of 27 inches (68.5 cm) in circumference and 11½ inches (29 cm) in height. Like the hat, it is worked in the round from the bottom up on a 24-inch circular needle. The same repeating 17-stitch Pattern Stitch used in the hat runs throughout the body of the cowl, creating a seamless visual harmony between the two pieces when worn as a set. The cowl's larger circumference and height make it a substantial, wrap-worthy accessory ideal for layering over winter outerwear.
Techniques Used
- Knitting in the round – Both the hat and cowl are constructed entirely in the round, with no seaming required, making finishing quick and straightforward.
- Ribbing – Used at the brim of the hat to create a neat, stretchy edge that holds its shape against the head.
- Repeating stitch pattern – A 17-stitch repeat Pattern Stitch is worked across both pieces, creating the signature textured surface. This pattern can be followed either from the written instructions or from the included chart, giving knitters flexibility based on their preferred working style.
- Crown shaping and decreases – The hat features shaped crown decreases that taper the fabric neatly to the top of the hat.
- Needle transitions – Knitters switch from smaller to larger circular needles to achieve the correct gauge and fabric drape, and transition to double-pointed needles (or an equivalent method) for the hat's crown when the stitch count becomes too small for a circular needle.
- Blocking – Gauge is measured after blocking, and blocking is recommended to achieve the finished measurements listed in the pattern. This is an important step with tweed yarns to fully open up the stitch definition.
Stitches Used
- Ribbing – Used for the hat brim to provide elasticity and structure.
- Pattern Stitch – A 17-stitch, 8-row repeating stitch pattern that forms the primary textured fabric of both pieces. The pattern is worked over Rounds 1–8, repeated four times, followed by a final section (Rounds 33–40) to complete the body of each piece.
- Decrease stitches – Used during hat crown shaping to reduce stitch count and form the top of the hat.
