Lanessa Headband by Quail Studio – Free Knitting Pattern in Schachenmayr Luxury Velvet (ENGS10732)
The Lanessa Headband is a beautifully simple knitted accessory designed by Quail Studio and published by Schachenmayr. This free, downloadable PDF pattern produces a wide, cosy headband with a seamless tubular finish, making it an ideal project for beginner knitters looking to practise fundamental techniques while creating a stylish, wearable piece. The finished headband measures 48 cm in circumference and 15 cm in width, providing generous coverage that suits a wide range of head sizes and works beautifully across all seasons.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a single knitted headband worked flat in a classic moss stitch pattern. The piece is joined seamlessly at the ends using a three-needle bind-off, giving the finished accessory a polished, professional look with no visible seam. The result is a wide, textured headband with a subtle twist at the join, adding a touch of elegant structure to an otherwise straightforward design.
Techniques Used
- Provisional cast-on using waste yarn – The headband begins with a provisional cast-on, a technique where stitches are temporarily held using a contrast waste yarn. This allows the live stitches of the first row to be retrieved later for the seamless join. It is a particularly useful skill for beginner knitters to learn, as it opens up a wide range of seamless construction methods.
- Flat knitting – The body of the headband is worked back and forth in rows on a circular needle, producing a flat fabric that is later joined into a loop.
- Three-needle bind-off – Once the band reaches the required length of 48 cm, the waste yarn is removed and the live stitches of the first row are placed onto a spare needle. The two needle ends are then held parallel and worked together using a third needle to create a neat, integrated seam. The working needle is twisted so that the wrong sides face outward before binding off, creating the characteristic gentle twist in the finished headband.
- Blocking – The finished piece is blocked to the stated measurements to even out the moss stitch texture and allow the Schachenmayr Luxury Velvet yarn to bloom to its full, plush appearance.
- Optional yarn-end singeing – The pattern notes that yarn ends may be very carefully singed with a lighter to fuse the fibers, a technique suited to synthetic velvet yarns. The pattern includes an important safety note that this should only be carried out by adults, outdoors or over a fireproof surface.
Stitches Used
- Moss stitch (also known as seed stitch) – The entire body of the headband is worked in moss stitch, which is created by alternating knit and purl stitches across every row: *K1, P1; repeat from * to last stitch, K1. Unlike ribbing, moss stitch does not align the knit and purl columns, which produces a beautifully textured, non-curling fabric. This makes it an excellent stitch choice for a headband, as the fabric lies flat and holds its shape without requiring a border or edging.
- Knit stitch (K) – Used as part of the moss stitch pattern and during the three-needle bind-off.
- Purl stitch (P) – Used as part of the moss stitch pattern and during the provisional cast-on setup row.
