Product Description

Knitting pattern for a basic close-fitting beanie hat in 7 sizes, to fit a newborn baby right up to adult size, plus instructions to make it into either a ladybird or a frog hat.

There are a choice of sizes of eyes for the frog and head pieces for the ladybird to fit the size of beanie you are making. Also a choice of 2 simple hem styles.

This is a written pattern for a hat made on 2 needles with a back seam, using any smooth 8 ply / DK yarn of your choice.

The basic hat pattern is the same for either the ladybird or the frog and can also be used as a simple stocking stitch beanie pattern without the creature features.

(BTW if anyone recognises these designs from an old copy of "Creative Knitting" and thinks I've stolen the ideas – no, they were my patterns that were published and I've just rewritten and improved them)!

What is Being Made

The Ladybird & Frog Beanies pattern provides instructions for creating close-fitting knitted beanies in seven different sizes, ranging from newborn through adult. Each beanie can be customized into either a ladybird or frog design, making this a versatile pattern suitable for gifting across multiple age groups. The hats are designed to fit snugly on the head, with circumferences ranging from 32 cm for newborns to 54 cm for adults, and heights varying from 13.5 cm to 22 cm depending on size.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental beanie construction techniques. The pattern utilizes a basic close-fitting hat structure that serves as the foundation for both the ladybird and frog variations. Knitters will work with two different needle sizes to create the proper fabric tension and fit. The pattern includes instructions for embellishing the basic hat form to transform it into either animal character, incorporating techniques for adding decorative features that distinguish each design.

Stitches Used

While the PDF content does not explicitly detail every individual stitch, the pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty and works with DK weight yarn on standard needles. The construction involves typical beanie stitches appropriate for creating a fitted, seamless or nearly seamless hat structure. The pattern also includes embroidery techniques for adding facial features and details to complete the ladybird or frog designs.

Materials Required

The Ladybird & Frog Beanies pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply), with yardage requirements varying by size. Newborn sizes require approximately 50 metres of yarn, while adult sizes need up to 120 metres. The pattern specifies 4 mm (US 6) needles and 3.25 mm (US 3) needles as basic requirements. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for sewing seams and embroidering facial features, and optionally a 4 mm crochet hook. A few safety pins are recommended for holding stitches during construction.

Size Range and Customization

This pattern's strength lies in its comprehensive sizing. The seven included sizes accommodate:

  • Newborn
  • 3 to 6 months
  • 6 to 12 months
  • Toddler
  • 3 to 9 years
  • 10 years to teen
  • Adult

Each size includes specific measurements for head circumference, hat circumference, and hat height. Knitters should note that hats are intentionally made smaller than actual head measurements to ensure they stay securely in place during wear.
