What is Being Made

The Lady Vakarute is a knitted cardigan design created by designer Natalie Pelykh and translated by Katharina Sokiran. This cardigan is available in multiple sizes ranging from 32 inches to 42 inches chest circumference, making it suitable for various body measurements. The design offers flexibility in fit by recommending that knitters take exact body measurements and choose the size based on actual circumference rather than relying solely on standard sizing.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft, classified as an intermediate difficulty level. The construction involves fundamental knitting techniques that require prior experience with basic stitches and shaping methods. The cardigan is worked using traditional knitting needles appropriate for sport weight yarn.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The Lady Vakarute cardigan employs a variety of essential knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
  • Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches for foundational fabric construction
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) for right-leaning decreases
  • Purl 2 together (p2tog) for decreases on wrong-side rows
  • Slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over (sl1-k2tog-psso) for centered double decreases
  • Slip, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (skp) for left-leaning decreases
  • Knit front and back (kfb) for increases
  • Yarn over (yo) for decorative eyelet increases
  • Through the back loop (tbl) stitching for twisted stitch variations
  • Bind off (b/o) for finishing edges
  • Pick up (p/u) stitches for adding bands or borders
  • Beginning of round (BOR) techniques indicating potential circular construction or seamless elements

Yarn and Materials

The Lady Vakarute cardigan is designed for sport weight yarn, a lightweight option that creates a delicate, refined fabric suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 370 grams (13 ounces) for the smallest 32-inch size to 550 grams (19.4 ounces) for the largest 42-inch size. Knitters will need appropriately sized knitting needles compatible with sport weight yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape as specified in the pattern instructions.

Size Range and Customization

The cardigan is offered in eight sizes with chest circumferences of 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42 inches, and corresponding metric measurements in centimeters (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, and 106.5 cm). The pattern emphasizes the importance of accurate body measurement and gauge swatching to ensure the finished cardigan achieves the desired fit and drape.
