Pattern Summary: King Cole 5754 – Ladies Round and Stand Up Neck Sweaters in Rosarium

Pattern King Cole 5754 is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern for two ladies' sweater designs: a Round Neck Sweater and a Stand Up Neck Sweater, both knitted in King Cole Rosarium super chunky yarn. The pattern covers a wide range of sizes, from 81 cm to 127 cm (32 in to 50 in) bust measurement, making it accessible to a broad range of knitters. It is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it a rewarding project for knitters who are comfortable with shaping techniques but may not yet have tackled advanced construction methods.

For every King Cole pattern purchased, a donation is made to the Pink Ribbon Foundation, meaning your purchase supports an important charitable cause.

Design Overview

Round Neck Sweater

The Round Neck Sweater is a classic, wearable design featuring a neat, fitted round neckline finished with a tidy neckband. The sweater is constructed using raglan sleeve shaping, a traditional and flattering construction method in which the sleeves extend all the way to the neckline, creating diagonal seam lines from the underarm to the collar. This gives the garment a relaxed, comfortable fit across the shoulders.

The body and sleeves are worked flat in separate pieces and then joined. The raglan seams are joined leaving the left back raglan open initially, which allows stitches to be picked up cleanly around the neckline for the neckband finishing. The neckband itself is worked by picking up stitches from stitch holders at the top of the sleeves and along both sides of the neck opening, creating a smooth, continuous band.

Shaping on the raglan edges involves decreasing at both ends of right-side rows and at alternating rows, giving the characteristic diagonal line of a raglan construction. Neck shaping is worked simultaneously with raglan shaping, requiring the knitter to manage two sets of decreases at once — a key intermediate-level skill.

Stand Up Neck Sweater

The Stand Up Neck Sweater shares the same basic construction and raglan shaping as the Round Neck version but features a stand-up collar rather than a flat neckband. This collar adds a cosy, contemporary feel to the design and is particularly well suited to the super chunky weight of King Cole Rosarium, which gives the collar excellent structure and warmth without being stiff or heavy.

Construction and Techniques

Both sweaters are knitted flat in pieces — back, front, and two sleeves — and then seamed together. This is a traditional garment construction approach that allows each section to be worked and checked individually before assembly. Key construction and shaping techniques used throughout the pattern include:

  • Raglan sleeve shaping — decreases worked at both ends of rows to shape the armhole and sleeve head simultaneously
  • Neck shaping — stitches placed on stitch holders and later picked up for the neckband or stand-up collar
  • Thumb method cast on — specified for casting on stitches at the start of the back and other sections, producing a firm, elastic edge well suited to chunky knitting
  • Stitch holders — used to hold live stitches at the neckline and sleeve tops while other sections are completed
  • Picking up and knitting stitches evenly along shaped neck edges to create a neat, professional neckband finish
  • Simultaneous shaping — working raglan decreases and neck edge decreases at the same time, a technique that requires careful attention to the pattern instructions

Stitches Used

The main fabric of both sweaters is worked in reversed stocking stitch (also known as reverse stockinette), which means the purl side of the fabric faces outward as the right side. This creates a softly textured, matte surface that complements the character of King Cole Rosarium yarn beautifully. Standard stocking stitch is also referenced in the tension information.

The welts, cuffs, and neckband are worked in 1x1 rib (knit one, purl one rib), which provides stretch and a neat,
