Product Description

Are you looking for a fun-to-knit shawl? Krystiana is just the thing! Knit on the bias, it combines two simple lace stitch patterns and lots of color.

The sample uses 2 hanks of Manos del Uruguay's beautiful FINO plus one FINO MINI KIT, but you could use several colors of any heavy sport/DK weight yarn from your stash! (Each hank you use makes room to buy more. . . )

The finished size is 85 x 16" blocked, but you can make it any size by adding or subtracting any multiple of 8 stitches and working more (or fewer) rows. You're the boss of your knitting! Note that changing the size will affect the amount of yarn needed.

Krystiana Shawl by Melissa Leapman

What is Being Made

Krystiana is a knitted shawl designed by Melissa Leapman. This intermediate-level project creates a finished shawl measuring approximately 85 x 16 inches when blocked, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft. The shawl employs lace knitting techniques to achieve its delicate, openwork aesthetic. Lace knitting involves strategic yarn overs and decreases that create intentional holes and patterns throughout the fabric, requiring intermediate-level skill to execute the stitch sequences accurately.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is the Herringbone Lace Pattern, which forms the foundation of this design. This pattern incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the basic foundation stitch
  • Yarn overs (yarn over) – creates the decorative openwork and lace holes characteristic of the pattern
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease that pairs with yarn overs for balanced lace
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease used in conjunction with yarn overs to create the herringbone directional effect

The Herringbone Lace Pattern repeats across rows, with yarn overs and decreases positioned to create the characteristic diagonal lines and openwork that define the shawl's visual structure.

Materials

This project uses DK weight yarn, specifically:

  • 2 hanks of Manos Yarn's Fino in Boudoir (main color)
  • 1 Manos Yarn's Fino Mini Kit containing five contrast colors: Phoebe Folly, Rosewater, Pocketwatch, Watered Silk, and Brass Button
  • Knitting needles, size 6 (4 mm), or the size needed to achieve proper gauge

Gauge

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. In the Herringbone Lace Pattern, the unblocked gauge is 24 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches. After blocking, the gauge adjusts to 23 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches, reflecting the fabric's behavior when wet-blocked and dried to finished dimensions. Checking gauge before beginning ensures the final shawl will meet the intended finished measurements of 85 x 16 inches.
