Product Description

This pretty cuddly and soft tam has been knitted on circular needles so that there is no seam to sew up. The pattern uses a merino dk wool rib with King Cole cuddly chunky yarn on the main body. The yarn used for the main body is like fleece and can be fiddly to knit so take extra care with each stitch. The hat will fit a child right up to adult with a head circumference from 16" - 20".

Knitted Tam by Yarn Designs

What is Being Made

This is a pretty knitted tam hat designed for knitters using UK terminology. The tam is a classic, rounded hat style that works as a versatile accessory. The pattern is sized as one size and is suitable for knitters of all skill levels, particularly beginners looking to expand their hat-making repertoire.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The tam is constructed using circular needles, which allow for seamless, in-the-round knitting. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. The pattern is written in UK knitting terminology, making it accessible to knitters familiar with British stitch abbreviations and instructions.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The tam features a rib stitch for the lower band, which provides elasticity and helps the hat sit securely on the head. The main body is worked in stocking stitch, the fundamental knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance. A bobble detail adorns the crown, adding a decorative finishing touch to the design. The construction progresses from the ribbed cuff upward through the body, then decreases toward the crown where the bobble is attached.

Yarn and Materials

The tam uses a combination of two distinct yarns to achieve its design:

  • King Cole Merino wool in royal blue (DK weight): Used for the rib cuff and bobble detail, providing a refined, smooth texture
  • King Cole Cuddles chunky yarn: Forms the main body of the hat, creating visual interest and texture contrast

The pattern notes that King Cole Cuddles chunky yarn can be tricky to work with, so knitters should take extra care with each stitch to maintain consistent tension and stitch definition. The swatch gauge for King Cole Cuddles is 20 rows to 14 stitches in stocking stitch.

Total yarn requirements are minimal: one 100g ball of King Cole Cuddles chunky yarn for the main body, plus approximately 50g of merino wool for the rib and bobble detail.

Tools and Equipment Required

This project requires specific knitting needles and accessories:

  • 4mm circular knitting needles (for ribbed cuff)
  • 5mm circular knitting needles (for main body)
  • 5mm double-pointed needles
  • Darning needle (for weaving in ends)
  • Scissors
  • Clover pompom maker in small size (for creating the bobble crown detail)
