Stylecraft Special XL Knitted Blankets Pattern 9934 – Two Easy Designs for Beginners

This downloadable PDF from Stylecraft presents two easy-knit blanket designs worked in Special XL super chunky yarn: a Rectangle Blanket measuring 150 cm wide by 200 cm (59 x 79 in) and a Square Blanket measuring 150 cm wide by 150 cm (59 x 59 in). Both designs are rated as beginner-friendly and are constructed by knitting individual squares and rectangles separately before joining them together, making this an ideal project for those new to knitting or anyone looking for a satisfying, straightforward make.

Design Overview

Rectangle Blanket

The Rectangle Blanket is a generously sized throw, perfect for sofas, beds, or as a cosy wrap. It is worked in two colours:

  • A – Graphite (3060) x 9 balls of Stylecraft Special XL 200g
  • B – Silver (1203) x 5 balls of Stylecraft Special XL 200g

The two-tone colourway of Graphite and Silver gives the finished blanket a contemporary, neutral aesthetic that suits a wide range of interiors. The finished dimensions of 150 cm x 200 cm make it a substantial and practical piece.

Square Blanket

The Square Blanket offers a slightly more compact finished size of 150 cm x 150 cm, worked in a warm, natural palette:

  • A – Mushroom (1832) x 7 balls of Stylecraft Special XL 200g
  • B – Cream (3055) x 5 balls of Stylecraft Special XL 200g

The combination of Mushroom and Cream creates a soft, earthy look that feels timeless and versatile, complementing both modern and traditional home settings.

Construction Method

Both blankets are constructed using a modular, patchwork-style approach. Rather than knitting the entire blanket in one piece, the pattern instructs the knitter to create a series of individual components — large squares, side rectangles, and border pieces — which are then seamed or joined together to form the complete blanket. This method has several advantages for beginners:

  • Each individual piece is small and manageable, making it easy to pick up and put down
  • There is no need to handle a large, heavy piece of knitting on the needles
  • Mistakes can be easily corrected on a small swatch rather than across a full blanket width
  • The modular approach allows for a pleasing, structured layout with clear colour blocking between the two chosen shades

Large Squares

For the Rectangle Blanket, 18 large squares are worked in colour A and 17 large squares in colour B. Each square is cast on with 20 stitches using 12mm needles and worked in garter stitch until the piece measures 22 cm (8¾ in), ending on a right-side row before casting off knitwise on the wrong side.

Side Rectangles

In addition to the large squares, the pattern includes side rectangles — for the Rectangle Blanket, 24 side rectangles are worked in colour A. These are cast on with 10 stitches and worked in the same garter stitch technique, creating the border and edge detailing that frames the finished blanket neatly.

Stitches and Techniques Used

Both blanket designs rely on a single, classic stitch that makes them truly accessible to knitters of all experience levels:

  • Garter Stitch (g st) – formed by knitting every row on both the right side and wrong side. This creates a reversible, ridged fabric with a pleasing texture that lies flat without curling at the edges — an especially useful property for blankets and throws. Because there is no need to purl, garter stitch is often the very first stitch a beginner learns
