Product Description

The body of this unicorn toy is knitted on 2 straight needles.

The legs are knitted in circle on double pointed needles. There are photos how to make it.

Also there is text instruction how to knit it on 2 straight needles (no photos for this method).

The legs of the toy are movable and it can stand on its own.

To make this pattern, you need:

Hollow fiber stuffing;

Crochet hook to attach the mane and tail;

4 buttons with two holes;

Knit Unicorn Toy by KnitLand

Project Overview

This is a downloadable knitting pattern for creating an adorable handmade unicorn toy, designed as an intermediate-level project. The finished toy stands approximately 22 cm (about 8 3/4 inches) tall and features movable legs, making it an engaging and playful finished piece. The pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle multi-technique construction.

What Is Being Made

The Knit Unicorn is a stuffed toy featuring a knitted body, four movable legs, a horn, mane, and tail. The design combines various knitting techniques to create a three-dimensional figure with realistic proportions and articulated limbs that can be positioned in different poses.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs two distinct construction methods, giving knitters flexibility in their approach:

  • Flat knitting method: The main body is knitted on 2 straight needles using flat construction, with detailed photographic instructions included to guide the process
  • Circular knitting method: The legs are knitted in the round using double pointed needles, creating seamless tubular sections. Text instructions are provided for knitters preferring the flat method alternative
  • Stuffing and assembly: The toy is constructed with hollow fiber stuffing to create a soft, cuddly finished product
  • Embellishment attachment: A crochet hook is used to attach the mane and tail, combining crochet techniques with the knitted base

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches essential for toy construction:

  • K – knit stitch
  • P – purl stitch
  • st – stitch
  • M1 – make a stitch by lifting strand between stitches from front

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The pattern calls for 4-ply weight yarn in multiple colors and fiber types:

  • White yarn: White wool blend yarn, 390 m/100 g, used for the primary body construction
  • Pink yarn: Pink cotton yarn of the same thickness as the white yarn, used for body accents
  • Yellow yarn: A small quantity for knitting the horn
  • Specialty yarn for mane and tail: Alize Forever Melange (100% microfiber acrylic), 300 m/50 g, provides texture and visual interest to these features

Tools and Notions

Beyond yarn, the following supplies are required to complete the project:

  • Double pointed needles (for circular leg construction)
  • 2 straight needles (for flat body construction)
  • Crochet hook (for attaching mane and tail)
  • Hollow fiber stuffing
  • 2 black beads for eyes
  • 4 buttons with two holes (for leg attachment and articulation)
  • Strong thread for sewing on legs securely
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors

Pattern Features

This pattern is designed with accessibility and visual learning in mind. Photographic instructions accompany the flat-knitting method, making it easier for intermediate knitters to follow the construction process. Alternative text-based instructions are provided for those using the circular needle method, ensuring all knitters can successfully complete the project regardless of their preferred technique.
