Product Description
This scarf is made in the mosaic knitting technique in which one color is used across the row and the specified stitches of the opposite color are slipped instead of knitting them, creating the vertical lines. Mosaic knitting is quite easy and satisfying!
The mosaic scarf shown is made with 1 ball of #226 Black and 1/2 ball of hand-dyed #201 Winter White of Patons Classic Wool Worsted yarn (Note: This yarn was dyed with Easter Egg dyes, which you can read about in my April 4, 2015 blog post at TheCrochetArchitect website). You can make your scarf with any yarn you desire.
Since I didn’t want the hand-dyed yarn to pool, I decided to design a mosaic scarf with it. It worked out great and there was absolutely NO pooling!
Your scarf can easily be made wider by adding another pattern repeat and it can be made longer by working more repeats, as well.
The pattern includes both written instructions and a mosaic knitting chart.

What Is Being Made
The Knit Mosaic Scarf is an intermediate-level knitted accessory measuring approximately 4 3/4 inches wide by 44 inches long, though the length can be adjusted to personal preference. This scarf showcases a striking two-color mosaic pattern created through strategic color changes and stitch placement, resulting in a sophisticated wearable textile art piece.
Techniques Used
This design employs garter stitch as the foundational knitting technique throughout the entire scarf. The mosaic effect is achieved through color work, utilizing a main color and contrasting color yarn worked in a structured pattern. The scarf features solid color sections at the beginning and end, with the mosaic pattern forming the central design element. This approach allows knitters to create complex visual patterns without the complexity of traditional fair isle or intarsia techniques.

The pattern uses essential knitting abbreviations and stitches:
- K: Knit stitch
- P: Purl stitch

Materials and Gauge
The Knit Mosaic Scarf requires worsted weight yarn in 100% wool construction. The recommended yardage includes 1 ball of #226 Black (main color) and 1/2 ball of #201 Winter White in hand-dyed green, blue, and purple tones (contrasting color). The photographed model was created using Patons Classic Wool Worsted, utilizing approximately 145 yards of black yarn and 105 yards of white hand-dyed yarn for the full 44-inch length.
Knitting is worked on US Size 7 (4.5 mm) needles, or the size required to achieve proper gauge. The pattern gauge is 22 stitches and 48 rows per 4 inches, which is essential to maintain for accurate finished dimensions.
