Product Description
This pattern is part of my '[over mossy stones...][1]' e-book, featuring 9 designs.
Kirsibaum means Cherry Tree in my native Swiss German dialect. The woven slip stitch pattern on the cowl evokes the striated markings characteristic for the bark of cherry trees. Although the pattern mimics the bark, I would compare the feel of the fabric more to cherry blossoms, it's so soft and delicate!

Kirsibaum Cowl by OwlCat Designs
What Is Being Made
Kirsibaum is an advanced knitted cowl designed by OwlCat Designs. The name means "Cherry Tree" in Swiss German dialect, and the cowl features a woven slip stitch pattern inspired by the striated markings found on cherry tree bark. This versatile neckwear piece measures approximately 52 inches (132 centimeters) in circumference, making it suitable for wrapping twice around the neck for extra warmth or wearing open and long on warmer days. Despite its textured appearance, the cowl is described as having a soft and delicate feel reminiscent of cherry blossoms, allowing it to layer comfortably under coats without adding excessive bulk.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This advanced knitting project utilizes the woven slip stitch pattern as its primary stitch technique. The woven slip stitch creates the distinctive striated visual effect that echoes the natural texture of cherry tree bark. This stitch pattern requires careful attention to technique and is appropriate for experienced knitters seeking to expand their stitch repertoire. The cowl is worked in the round on circular needles, a construction method that creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for neckwear applications.
The pattern employs a two-needle technique for casting on: US #9/5.5mm needles (one size larger than the working gauge) are used exclusively for the cast-on edge, then the work transitions to US #8/5mm needles for the body of the cowl. This needle-size differential helps create a more elastic and comfortable cast-on edge that stretches easily over the head without compromising the integrity of the finished fabric.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for Dream in Color "Perfectly Posh Single Ply," a luxury blend composition of 70% wool, 10% mohair, 10% silk, and 10% cashmere. One 100-gram skein (3.5 ounces) providing 360 yards (329 meters) of yardage is sufficient to complete the cowl. This fiber blend contributes to the soft, delicate hand-feel and drape characteristic of the finished piece.
Needles: A US #8/5mm circular needle measuring 24 inches (60 centimeters) in length, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge, serves as the primary working needle. US #9/5.5mm needles are required for the cast-on only.
Notions: One stitch marker is needed to track the beginning of rounds during knitting.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this advanced project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked on US #8/5mm needles in the woven slip stitch pattern. The finished cowl measures approximately 52 inches (132 centimeters) in circumference, providing ample fabric for versatile styling options.
